So here is the deal we had a bad storm last sunday and I was on my way to my moms house and I opened my sunshade for the sunroof and I was driving down the road and I started to get drips on my head and I was like oh no here we go, so with that said I got to my parents and had my dad spray the top of the car down, and yup it was leaking. I was so pissed, of course I was leaving for vacation the next day, so I called haddad subaru here and asked them if they had anything open for the week and they said yes, so I had my parents bring it downand leave it there, so the dealer called me while I was on vacation and told me yes the sunroof itself is leaking and needs repalcement, great! So my extended warranty that I purchased when I got the car through subaru the dealer said that this is not a covered item under this warranty, of course. So the dealer said to leave it with them for the week cause it was raining here and would leak and they would leave it in the garage for me so they ordered a new sunroof and installled it in for me, the nice part about this sitaution was the dealer took the car in right away and diagnoised it and kept it there for me while I was away so I really appreciate the dealer for that. I am in touch with subaru on this 4 year old car needing a sunnroof, this is not right, so subaru is going to help me out I have to send them the repair order and they are going to help me out which is great! 86ruguy Posted June 29, 2008 Share Posted June 29, 2008 i realize that you have already had the work done and i wish you had posted this sooner. but sunroofs are designed to leak. there are 4 drain tubes....2 towards the front and 2 towards the rear that are for water runoff. the main problem with a sunroof leaking on you inside the car is these tubes get plugged over time and nobody knows they're there and never cleans them. i had a 88 chevy s-10 blazer that had this prob and as soon as i cleaned the tubes it never leaked on me again. in fact my brother in law now owns it and it still doesn't leak. 4 years now. again sorry i didn't see this b4 you had the work done Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
gbhrps Posted June 29, 2008 Share Posted June 29, 2008 This generation of OBW's had another source for leaks from the sunroof that was covered by a TSB. Where the metal for the roof is rolled down into the opening for the sunroof, a factory calking was to be applied from the front outside corners of the sunroof opening towards the rear. In some cars this wasn't done and rain water would be wicked into the metal seams, follow the roof substructure supports and eventually would leak out from the overhead maplights at the windshield. My 02 had the caulking but it shrank and spider cracked the paint about 2 inches back from the front corners of the sunroof opening, and the water wicked in as I described. The fix was to rough up the paint in the area w2ith 180 grit sandpaper, apply a 5 minute epoxy very thinly over the area, and then paint the epoxy with touchup paint. Leak ceased. Anybody tell me where I can find a copy of this TSB? My 01OBW has started leaking after a heavy downpour. I either drips in the front by the drivers pillar or out the opening for the center sholderbelt in the cargo area roofliner. Depending on which way the car is leaning. This site is interesting in gaining a heads up on possibilities as warranties near expiration. If you have any hint, get it on a service record before expiration.
