clutch cable : prone to failure?

Recommended Posts

clutch cable snapped today.

had to put one on a little less than 2 yrs. ago.

i know thats not like every couple weeks, but still seems a little soon to replace again.

they both snapped right at the clutch pedal.

luckily autozone had one in stock so no down time, but i usually have to order every little part i need and wait for days at times.

i carry a lot of spare parts with me from timing belts to coathangers and everything in between so i was just wondering if it is a known weak part i should have on hand.

thanks, Bill

no clutch cables are rare failure items.

i would guess there's some additional load on the clutch and it's causing it to wear to have two of them break. i've seen this before and never did figure out why the clutch was harder than most XT6's to put in...it just was. clutch worked and operated fine, just was tight. it broke once and i replaced it and it never broke again. broke in the same place yours sounds like it did.

.or it could have been just plain bad luck

I've seen mention in these forums of the aftermarket cables stretching. Apparently the dealer cables are much better. In fact, as more and more aftermarket parts are coming out of China, quality continues to decline. Our shop recently decided to buy as much from the dealers as is practical, without bottle necking the work flow too much. Too much crap out there these days.

not sure about the one i took out (hot, tired, aggrevated) but this one (by chance) is routed under.

thanks, Bill

Excelent. Most all the failure's I've seen were from improper installation, or improper routing. Got my hatch for $200 because the owner thought the clutch was bad (they had just replaced it). It was installed incorrectly at the pedal end and had broken the rubber sheath. I put in a brand new cable from the dealer and the brand new clutch they had installed worked perfectly. Time will tell if they did the clutch properly or not I suppose

Get one from the dealer, and just keep it in the car for a while untill you either feel like doing it all over again, or yours breaks. I just bought a 92 loyale that was going through clutch cables, and wouldn't release the clutch, put an OEM one on it and it's fine. $22 from the dealer, not bad.

the last 2 clutch cables that were in the car felt like an old dump truck.

the action on this one is a lot easier to work.

also the last 2 needed to be threaded a lot further down(2" of thread showing) this one adjusted to where theres probably only 1/2" of thread showing at the fork end.

is it just a difference in brands?

thanks, Bill

+1 Billion, for the money you can't beat the OEM cables:headbang:

I was reminded that I'm getting old when I replaced mine, my back just can't do that anymore!

You will see the difference in the construction of the cables when you get a new oem one in your hand. It has plastic sleeves over the cable so there is no metal on metal contact. VERY SMOOTH! Feels like a hydraulic clutch. Make sure you tell them 4wd or 2wd, whichever you have, they are different part numbers, but I don't know why.
