cd45 Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 I have a tired EA82 in my '87 wagon. I have a '84 Brat with a Weberized EA81 that runs great, except that the 3AT went out. Is it possible, without major work or changes, to put bolt the EA81 to a 5SP D/R tranny? I have to keep the wagon on the road, it is my daily driver. I want to put the EA81 in while I rebuild the EA82. If it works in the wagon the way it worked in the Brat, I might just leave it there. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. chef_tim Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 I've done it. It was awhile ago but as I remember the only real problems were with the plumbing. I think I had to have one of the power steering lines custom made and the radiator lines were kind of funky too. If I remember correctly I used a copper 90º in there. TomRhere Posted July 7, 2008 Share Posted July 7, 2008 Doing the clutch side of it, would be simular to doing a D/R 5speed swap in an EA-81 body. There's lots of info on doing that part of the swap on here. Electrically, you would have to extend the wires for the disty so they reach the EA-81 disty. Method of doing so is up to you, but I would just use some ring and spade terminal ends on some lenghts of wire for a temporary hook up. I believe you would need to swap the temp gauge sender betwen the two engines so your gauge reads normally, They are different. I think the oil pressure unit are the same, providing,,, that they both be gauge or both warning light. If you remove the spacers for the ASV tubes on the EA-81, the EA-82 Y-pipe will bolt right on. Can't remember if the EA-82 Y-pipe will bolt on if the spacers are left on, but can say it will hang lower because of them. You may need to replace the fuel hoses to the Weber carb, don't think the stock EA-82 lines will reach properly. The hoses, that are now on the BRAT, should work though... Over the years of stuffing this engine into that car body, I've used sections of exhaust pipe to aide in routing radiator hoses. All just temporary until proper hose could be found of course, but it'll last for quite some time that way. I left one in for over 6 years because a friend said "I was stupid for doing so 'cause it would rust thru fast". Oh contrare mon amie...... I used the carb from the EA82 on the EA81 block. there are a few other little things you have to do for that but if you are using the EA81 block and Intake it should be a lot easier.
