I couldn't find a new OEM subaru axle for my '88 turbo a while back, and even the re-man ones through them were like over $400...

I went to a local auto parts store (Mike's Auto) and got one with a lifetime warranty for like $65... sure it might break, but it'll be free to replace...

I haven't had to shop for an ea81 axle yet, although it'd be good to have a spare...

Yeah the EMPI's I have have a year warranty. I got one replaced. But now don't really feel like running over there again (they were closed the first try, should have called) to get the other one. Plus I already tore it apart to see if I could put the DOJ off one of my old axles on it.... can't.

But I didn't do anything really but remove the boot, could put sonme new clamps on it and just replace it. Pretty much free now and I'll have about 6 months to get a couple really good ones. :)

That sounds like the best plan yet.

hey if you do decide to get rid of the old beast pm or call me i will give you 100 bucks for it and come get it . my cel 509 929 1101

I'll keep ya in mind. But I'm gonna be keeping it for now.

I couldn't afford to replace it at this point. And I need to wheel something. One of the things keeping me sane these days.

I think alot of it was me being way too stoked on a particular wheeling trip.

And my Soob telling me "No!"

Now that the tip is past, nothing I nor my Subaru can do about it, I seem to have the love again.

Yesterday though... All I could think was "I should be out at TSF right now."

Still need lower gears though.

For some reason I see a long bumpy relationship with that car. And a divorced transfercase in it's future.

For now just keeping it on the trails. :)

MWE is mail order. Might be worth a call - he could have them setting on the shelf ready to ship. one or two day air might be cheaper than Subaru!?

For me it's not worth my time to shop for parts, it's actually easier to have it shipped to my house. It's home waiting for me. No gas, no stopping in, no picking up, no traffic, no waiting in line. I love it and my time is worth too much to waste time like that. But of course everyone's situation and modis operandi is different.

Online Subaru has them for $102 but i don't know if all brats are EA81 or some are EA82? The cv joints were $140 for one side and $120 for the other.

A rear brat axle was $900+ each! I doubt if subaru is selling new axles any more though - wonder where they get their remanneds? hopefully they have better spec's than everywhere else.

Yeah I'm gonna warranty my EMPI. Run it till it breaks. Meanwhile order a couple MWE's to be sitting ready.

Clearity is here now that nothing I can do will get me on the trails yesterday....

Thanks. :)

You can always call Richie at Superior Import Repair (503-288-8634). He can get you prices and the low-down on the various manufacturers. If you buy from him you get the over the counter transaction from someone knowledgeable in Subarus.

I'll have to make that an option. :)

we have them in stock at Aaron's subaru only wrecking yard in seattle. and wont be a problem to ship it to you VIA UPS.

give us a call if your intrested 800-541-7271 or 206-243-4665

I'm gonna give another EMPI a whirl as it's under warranty.

But I'm gonna needs something else sooner or later, (proly sooner than later)

So I assume these are genuine used axles?

And the options grow. :)

My biggest thing with getting JY axles myself is alot to do with my eye not being trained to tell if it's a real Soob axle or just a cheapo one.

And last time I went to the local yard they purged all thier old Subies.

That was months ago though.

I just want to get a couple good ones under there the next time around.

I've only had the car just over a year (well about a year). I can have the axles out in about 10-15 min. (or about 3 songs on KGON) I actually consider that to not be a good thing. Doing it too often.

i'll beat the dead horse - try and do a search for axles. not sure if they'll come up since there's tons of various axle questions, but failed new axles are common. the only repeatable solution is Subaru or MWE. the failures are widespread and variable. instant failure (been there done that), or 3 months, one year, blowing apart, clicking on the first rotation, vibrations right out of the box, seaping grease...you name it, it's all on here. i'm surprised companies aren't doing something about it, but i guess there's no recourse or demand for quality or something is jacked up in the process. i suppose it's cheaper to replace broke ones than upgrade the rebuild process.

granted there are *some* good axles out there...i don't know what the stats are but it's something like 75% chance of getting a good new axle verses 99% (MWE or Subaru)- that's why you'll see some people say "oh i got such and such brand and it's fine". that's crap for me, my time is not worth it particularly considering MWE is reasonable and Subaru axles are available if you can find them.

i am lazy and not wanting to learn this, so i don't do CV's either. i'd take the shop and boots to a machine shop before doing that work myself. so far i haven't had to though - it's either been MWE or good used Subaru units. probably a good bet for someone doing what you're doing offroad and stuff.

I just went through this with my mail carrier and her Honda CR-V today. Right outer boot is bad and she's picked up some gravel causing the joint to tick all the time. A new Honda CV joint w/boot is $200 (jobber/internet price), but her down time is limited since she uses the car 6 days a week to deliver mail. I can change out axles in less than an hour, but changing the CV joint too can add anywhere between 20 min and 2 hours. You can beat yourself silly getting those things apart sometimes.

A new Honda axle assembly is over $600 but my Honda dealer sells new aftermarkets too for under $100 list, and they have them in stock (none of the other options are in stock).

I suggest she go with the new aftermarket. She asks if they're any good. I told her I couldn't be sure but this dealer has never steered me wrong in over 25 years and they wouldn't sell junk since they would have to deal with them too in their service dept.

Then I added the clincher. Since we would be buying a new axle there would be no core exchange and we could keep her old axle. If the new one didn't prove reliable we could always order up the new CV joint from Honda for $200, then I could install it on her original axle at my leisure and have it ready to install the next time she had to drop the car off. - PS She had already figured out that particular boot/joint was always going to be a problem from the ruts/potholes she drives through in front of mailboxes. She liked the idea of having a spare. ;)

Win, win, win! She gets her car fixed cheap and fast, and I don't have to rush when beating the old CV joint off the original axle... ie recipe for a smashed thumb. And if the new aftermarket proves reliable, I may never have to change the CV joint at all!

  • 2 months later...
in case, you never figured this one out, I had a really similar problem on my 84 Hatch. It was the transmission mounts. They were cleaved in half! I couldnt tell till I levered against the transaxle and noticed how much it moved!

I got it all sorted. :)

But thanks for the input.

I noticed how whimpy the trans mounts were when I did my clutch.

Kinda would like to see what other heavier mount I could adapt to fit it. Not a ton of room there though for something off of a V8 machine.
