Question about EA82 MT conversion to EJ 5 MT

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of converting my '84 GL work Brat from the 5 speed d/r tranny (from an '88 wagon) to an EJ 5MT AWD transmission (along with an EJ18 or 22 engine). I have a one piece driveshaft already since there's too much rust to support the center carrier on the original two piece 'shaft. Anyone who's done this before know whether the driveshaft will have to be re-cut to match the AWD transmission?

from what i remember you have to get a custom drive line. but the other part of the equation is the front axles. being a different length then the ea82 the use of turbo axles wouldn't work. there was someone that was talking about building axles using legacy iners and 2wd ea81 shaft and outers. not sure if that ever worked out.

i did come up with one other way to deal with the front axles, take the front diff from a early fwd impreza and put it in the awd tranny. not the whole ring and pinion just the spider gears and housing, that would give you the 23 spines that you need to use the ea81 axles. not 100% if that would work, but it was something i was thinking about the other day as i was looking at my tranny.

now to just find a fwd impreza tranny and see if my idea would work.

i knew i had read something like this.

this one isn't into a ea81, but if you think about it you can use the drive line from a ea82 in the ea81 wagons and brats without modifying it. so one would think the same shortening would have to happen to the ea81

sorry it's not exactly what you are looking for but it's the best i could find.

I 100% know that the EJ 5MTs are a different length than the EA82 5MTs. so you're driveshaft will need to be modified.

I don't remember which is longer though....

I'm prepared to do that. Just needed to know.
