where is the ECU box on a legacy?

Hello,

 

My car has no spark and I cant figure out why. I would like to read the code on the ECU as this article talks of:

But I can't find my ECU with the flashing LED.

 

My car is a Subaru Legacy 1993.

 

The article says "all models" have this option, I hope this includes mine.

I will get you going in the right direction hopefully.

All you need to do is connect 2 separate wire connectors under the dash. Then the codes will be blipped out on the dash's check engine light when those connectors are connected.

 

One connector has green connectors. The other connector is black. Single wires.......on each.

you will view the code on your dash - check engine light or O2 sensor, whatever your Legacy has. you won't read the LED on the ECU itself (that's for older generation subaru's - EA and ER engines). yours is an EJ (newer generation).

 

the ECU is located under the carpeting where the passengers feet would be, pull up the carpet and remove the metal covering plate for access. it's easy to get to.

 

also - if the check engine light isn't on you aren't likely to get any codes from the ECU.

 

for a no spark - i'd want to check the coil pack.

93 leg computer is on drivers side tucked up way above the hood release lever, by the fuse box. its not on the passenger side foot well.

if your car is an automatic, it will have the transmission computer which is up there too.

Ok cool, so really I dont need to access the ECU then. I have a "check engine light" which is solid right now.

 

I looked for the connectors under the steering wheel to connect them but was unable to find them, unable to find any connectors that were not already connected. How many pins would these connectors have? I think I need to do this to make the check engine light do the codes (flashing)

 

meanwhile, I will remove the coil pack and bring it to autozone in hopes that they can test it for me.

the connectors are single prongs. they connectors, 1 is probably tucked up close to the ecu, it might be zip tied/ electral taped to keep it from hanging down. The Wires are VERY short. the other connector is likely to be located more over behind the cig lighter.

Hi, thanks much. Do you know where the connectors are to make the CEL flash the code sequence?

 

How many pins do they have? I see maybe one or two unused connectors but not two the same that belong together unless perhaps they are already connected. right now my CEL is just solid.

ok awesome, now i am getting some hope :)

 

i have to walk 4 miles to get to where my car is broken down, but i will do that now and report back. i will also bring my coil pack in for a test

In a 93 Legacy, you need to connect the two black connectors that are nearer the center console. The two green ones right above where the ECU is are for diagnostic tests with the car running. You will get a series of long and short flashes for each code stored by the ECU. The long flashes represent the 10's (count them), then you will get some short flashes, they are the 1's. for example a code 12 would be 1 long then two short flashes. When all codes stored have been displayed, the sequence starts over. Gather the codes, and bring them back to us. We can then help you pinpoint the problem based on what codes are showing.

ok good news, thanks to the help by everyone here I was able to locate the black wires, connect them and get the codes, four of them. ack.

 

I will start a new thread as now I need to figure out what to do next.
