uh what? so all that junk is just coming in straight from outside?

i turned on the fan today and like.. my arm got covered in black crap

ps.. the car has only been mine for about 3 hours.. hah.

It was an option along with A/C.

If there is one, it's underneath the glovebox, you don't need to remove the glovebox to get the filter out.

The bent metal plate in this picture is what the cover looks like on my year 2000 Impreza.

hmm thats interesting.. so does the air just come in unfiltered? where is the intake hose?

The air is drawn in through the grille around the base of your windscreen wipers.

There should be a screen mesh underneath the grille to stop smaller bits entering the cabin, things like plant spores and leaf litter.

Usually black chunks are some sort of foam seal falling apart on one of the doors.

Yes air comes in on all subarus (and almost all cars) under the hood at the base of the windshielf. They take advantage of the ram affect of air flow. Older cars used to catch it at the same place, but it wasnt under the good. They had a grill, and if you were lucky, a mesh screen for leaves.
