Couple of problems, needs to be fixed before emissions test.

*EDIT* I put this in the wrong forum, could someone please move it to the older generation forum?

I have a 92 loyale sedan with a faulty check engine light. I took apart the dash to get to it and found the bulb was bad, but I tried a known working bulb in the spot and it doesn't light either. So I checked with a volt meter, no power. Any ideas what to look at next? I think I have found which pin on the ecu provides the ground, and I'll check that next.

The second problem is the automatic seatbelt on the driver side does not move. I checked the connector on the motor and its connected. The lamp on the dash is blinking. I did a search here and found the manual scans to do a diagnostic, but I can't find the connector. What color is it, and where is it exactly?

Ok, after having everything apart, I have one thing fixed. There were three brown connectors next to the ecu (I believe these are diagnostic connectors) and the wires on the ones that were connected together didn't match. I switched them and the seatbelt immediately moved. I'm not sure why that would work like that, especially when the passenger belt always works.

I'm still stumped about the check engine light. The service manual is for an 89 and I am not sure if its the same as my 92. Pin 2 on the middle connector is supposed to be the CEL. I checked the voltage between the positive lead on the light's connector and pin 2 and it was 12 volts (key in the on position). I then checked for continuity between that pin and the negative lead of the light, and there is continuity. However if I check the resitance its around 500k ohms.

Something is not right here, either I don't have the right pin, or there is a short in the wire somewhere.

check engine light fix... cut the power wire to the CEL and splice the power wire in from the brake light out bulb.

This wont fix the problem but it will make the light go out. You should be able to IM it (remember this isnt fixing the problem, it just makes the light go on when u turn the key to on and go out when the car is running)

As for the seat belt, goto a junkyard and buy a new auto seatbelt motor/rail

they go out all the time on these. Drivers door gets opened 10+ times a day every day the motor gets quite the work out

Not a short, just the opposite, an open condition. The ground is missing.

I don't think the advice from the previous poster will work on the trouble you are having. The way the circuit works, power is provided to the light (and you have confimed that) and the ground side of the lamp is controlled inside the ECU. You have also proved that the connection is good to the ECU (good troubleshooting). I think there is a an IC inside the ECU that makes the ground to turn the light on when it needs to. I have replaced that IC in ECUs that have this kind of trouble. They can go bad at times. You will either have to replace the bad component or replace the ECU.

its washington cougar they dont have im laws like we do in alaska. I'd make the CEL functional and get the im done. no sense in droppin a new ecu into 92 loyale they arent worth the money to fix unless the body is in great condition.

like I said it wont fix the problem, but it will allow your car to pass the visual inspection (key on cEL on engine start Cel off) if its a ground thats missing, splice that from the brake light out bulb to complete the circuit
