davebugs
o.k. folks. A bit of a long story but someone else is doing an engine swap for me. It's a 97 Legacy GT manual - had very bad bearing noise. Going in is a 2.5 from a 98 OBW that needed the HG's fixed(that I 2.2'd). The fella swapping the engines says there are no hoses to go to the canister on the pass front up by the rad on the 'frame rail'. I have a parts 97 and 99 here and yep - they are different. Simplest solution? Hopefully a plumbing solution and not swapping intakes since the engine is in the car now. It looks like the bracket/3 lines(97) that come off the Pass side fuel rail may be able to be swapped. The engine is on the ground so it's a little tough to see all that would entail. I figure someone here has already run into this and hopefully has an elegant solution. Thanks, Dave
Legacy777
Are you talking about the charcoal canister? On the newer cars they moved them to the rear of the car.
idosubaru
davebugs - yeah i've seen this same issue before. i just ignore it. i remove the charcoal canister up front and leave it. i posted before about it and people said no worries. my current daily driver has no charcoal canister or lines from the intake to go to it - so i removed the bracket and canister. looks cleaner! and no problems. davebugs
Any CEL though? I gotta get through emissions (no CEL). Yes it's the charcoal canister and I know they moved it to the rear someplace. I'm just wondering how to plumb the thing. Infact I think perhaps the different plumbing (no canister up front) perhaps ties into the 2 different styles of filler tubes that I have hanging on the wall. I'm off to buy another Suby. Another 98 OBW - this one with under 100k - a rarity for me. Thanks for the replies. Dave
idosubaru
Dave, I don't really know all the details so I can't say for sure about the CEL. What I can tell you is that I didn't get a CEL on the two swaps I did. One was just an EJ25 swap - the other was an EJ22/EJ25 swap. In both cases the vehicle had the charcoal canister up front but the engine/intake manifold I was installing (from another vehicle) did not have the charcoal canister lines on the intake at all. So there was nothing for me to plug into the existing charcoal canister. So I basically ended up with vehicles that don't have a charcoal canister anywhere. I got no CEL from that. You might want to find my thread about this within the past year. I was asking why some have it and others do not and I'm fairly certain they said there aren't even any solenoids or gizmo's really involved to throw a code on this system...but im' not sure, i think my old thread might have some good info for you. good luck, Gary
davebugs
Short drive tonight - no CEL. Thanks folks.

Legacy777
If you don't have the charcoal canister, or want one, you can put a jumper hose from the vent line coming to the tank to the line going to the canister purge solenoid. This will just allow the vapors to be drawn into the manifold. What the charcoal canister provides that the above solution won't is that the charcoal canister absorbs the vapors while the car sits, acting kind of like a storage tank and then vents them to the manifold when the canister purge solenoid opens. Granted, that's probably over simplified, but the jist of it. Josh
