greenleg88
in my 97 legacy sedan, when i make a tight turn slowly. the car will stutter sometimes.. it feels liek thers somethign rubbing but the entire car vibrates. the vibration feels liek its coming from somewhere under the console... ive noticed a few times. that it generally only happens as soon as the car shifts into second gear and starts stuttering from there. a mechanic said it coudl be the axle but i said if it was the stutter woudl be there all the time.. and i thought it could be tie rods or ball joints.. when the car is off the groudn the tires arent loose so its not hte tie rods.. i thought maybe its the diff slipping or something... Any ideas? thanks for the help Fred
Suzam
First, if this is an automatic transmission locate the FWD fuse holder under the hood and insert any size fuse and drive the car. If it goes away it's torque bind (you can search the site for this, you will find TONs of info). Also, make sure all tires match and air pressure is correct. Suzam
After reading your other post about transmission trouble you may have a bad UV joint.

nipper
Torque bind. FLuid should be done every 3/36,000 miles to keep the car happy. nipper

Yes a very bad idea. Its only for emergencies like flat tires. No you wont save any gas since you still have 200-300 lbs or stuff to still make move. nipper
idosubaru
rather than pursue all possible options i would concentrate on what you should do right now. and that's have the fluid changed/flushed. moving on without doing that is a really bad idea. would it be bad to drive the car like that all the time?it's a band aid and should only be done after exhausting all other options..check tires, change fluid, change fluid again, fixing it properly by replacing the rear transfer clutches and duty C. but you can do it and you can drive the car for years with the FWD fuse in place. been there, done that and so have others. i'm not saying there isn't any risk at all, there's the theoretical possibility of the Duty C failing and locking the clutches...giving you torque bind which you already have. but for those that have done this i don't think any has actually had that happen. that's a contentious statement, you can read more about it here by searching if it interests you. and like nipper said, running in FWD to "save gas" doesn't work. greenleg88
hmm thats an intersting thought about the fwd to save gas.. anywhos... so i did like suggested. i took a 10amp fuse and put it in the fwd socket. and the car def felt like it was fwd.. but i do not recall seeing a fwd light come on on the dash.... nor was i really looking for one.. but none the less.. the stuttering was still there.. perhaps i didnt use the right fuse? and maybe i was wrong about it acutally being in front wheel drive? im not sure.. in the event that i did it correctly... what does that mean now? someone said if it goes away its torque bind.. so im guessing its not torque bind... and that ive got another problem to diagnose.... i havent really driven it much in the last two days... i havent had a chance to change the fluid yet...
