Fuel vapor separator--maintenance item?

Recommended Posts

I've got a '86 GL 4WD wagon, carbed. It has a "fuel separator" near the filler hose for the gas tank. Does this item need to be periodically replaced? I read somewhere that it does, but I can't find any info on it in here.

I'm not talking about the 3-port second fuel filter in the engine compartment found on some models before '85.

Any info would be appreciated.

I've always wondered the same thing,

Supposedly there is evap system located in the passenger side of the rear of the car behind the wheel well on these. Do we really even need them or can we hook them up like an offroad rig with just fuel supply, return and vent coming off the tank to the fuel pump?

Wouldn't think it'd be a maintenance item. Nothing inside of them according to the one I just cut open from an '86 BRAT. Did so just cause of this thread......

One hose goes to the top of unit, 2 others off bottom, all 3 go back to the tank. 2 near the fill tube, other one goes around to the front side of tank. Not sure what goes on inside of tank.....

Hmmm... pics are in my gallery also, should you want bigger pic. Dunno why they aren't thumbs and linked, but they ain't.......

The charcoal canister should not need to be replaced unless you TOP OFF YOUR CAR..

What happens when you top off your tank????????

Mine has done a NO START twice after I filled the tank

The charcoal canister is made vor vapors, not liquid. Getting liquid in it can cause engine flodding depending upon how the system is set up, or you can saturate the charcaol and it will basicaly turn to muc and possibly clog the lines.
