EA82T fuel pump pressure

I am getting some pretty gnarly pinging on the EJ22T under more than 1/2 throttle situations.

I tried using octane boost, but that didn't help.

I have the engine being feed by the stock EA82T fuel pump.

Is that enough to meet the demands of a pretty much stock EJ22T?

Should I look for a fuel pump with higher flow?

Thanks

could be.....EA82 FI (as far as I can tell....no difference between turbo, MPFI N/A, and SPFI) pump operates at 43.4, and 95l/h.

the EJ22e uses 80l/h at 36.3psi. but the EJ22t uses 150l/h at 43.4.

these numbers are out of an '88 XT FSM and '92 Legacy FSM.

look into the ford fuel pumps. I got one for a country squire for this '86 EJ22e wagon, and IIRC it was uber overkill for the N/A motor. and it only cost like $30.

One more interesting thing. I got my boost gauge hooked up and I think it's reading right, but with WOT, I am pushing 15 psi. Could explain the detonation. Anyone know how to lower the boost?

You have a problem with the wastegate pressure line.

First you need to immediately lower the boost or there is a potential for damage. Run a vac line from the nipple on the compressor housing directly to the wastegate actuator. That will lower your boost to about 6 psi for safety while you sort this out.

Second, figure out why the MAP sensor isn't working. This should be setting a code. The ECU will cut fuel at 12 psi so it's not getting a proper signal - either the MAP has failed or isn't hooked in right.

Pre-Det is very dangerous. At 15 psi the stock injectors can't put out enough fuel (they are not even adequate for 12 psi, which is why the ECU cuts fuel if it get's that high) for the amount of air being forced in. This causes a lean condition which drives up exhaust gas temps into dangerous, melty-piston type ranges. You can blow holes in the piston tops, blow out head gaskets, and crack heads very easily with pre-det. Get this under control now or start looking for another engine.

SPFI and MPFI pumps are different. SPFI runs on 21 psi. I tested one (an SPFI) *unregulated* the other day and 30ish was as high as it would get.

Not that it realy matters here, since he is using the MPFI pump. Just a note.

as far as I've been able to tell, they are the same. part number overlap in aftermarket catalogs, this '88 FSM only has one set of pump numbers (even though it covers non-turbo, turbo, and '6 versions).

also, the SPFI pump in my loyale ran the EJ22e perfectly until it rusted and started leaking......and the EJ22e needs 36.3. when I bought a new one, I bought one for a turbo car, and it made no difference at all. if the SPFI pump was peaking at 30, I would have had problems.

GD thanks for the help.

Just re-routed the wastegate controller. It will now spike at around 10 psi and I have around 5-6 psi consistently. The 10 psi spike is when I put the skinny pedal through the floor really fast. It will then drop down to about 5-6 and stay there.

No more pinging  .

Although 6 psi is a lot slower than 15 psi. But I guess that's the price I will have to pay to keep the temps out of the melty piston range.

Now it's time to see what the boost controller is fubar. I might go with a manual one if I can't figure out what it's messed up. BTW I was not getting a CEL when it was over boosting.

You should of ran into a fuel cut at 15 psi. after a couple seconds of high boost, so I would check the map sensor. Also I ran a EA-82T pump for a bit on my EJ-22T swap and it would not keep up with the engine if I pushed it at all. I just swaped to a Walbro 255LPH external pump and that keeps up all day long :).
