TheSubaruJunkie
Yup... take all the parts that are in the bag, and replace the ones in the carburator with them I was kinda intimidated when I did a rebuild on my Hitachi. What I did was clear off my kitchen table. lay an old towel on the table to work on. Then taped sheets of paper next to my work area on the table. Each sheet of paper represented a step I took in the teardown. I would set the new parts to my left... and when I removed something it went on a sheet of paper to my right. Take your time. Work in a well lit area, and careful not to drop anything on the floor.

I took the additional step of scotch taping the parts I took off to the paper in chronological order and writing a small caption next to them. I only had a Haynes manual, but the carb tear-down and rebuild section was adequate to go through methodically. I have had to use a screw extractor to remove some of the float needle valve seats from old carbs though. Other than that it is pretty easy if you take it step by step. cobcob
where might one get such a rebuild kit?
TeamCF
where might one get such a rebuild kit? Seems you can get one from Subaru.? I ordered one from Parts America. http://www.partsamerica.com/ Not in a Subaru box (Niehoff), but the parts in the bag look the same. Neat part is if a local Shucks or similar store in that chain has it. You can pay for it online (and get it cheaper than in the store) and go pick it up in the store if you want. The nearest Shucks hates me, always picking stuff up without paying. Now I just gotta get off my rump roast and do the rebuild. Had the kit sitting around for about a year now. Spiffy
SubaruJunkie is right, you just have to tear into it and it'll just flow... your kitchen table will look something like this: that was when I did the hitachi on my '82... --spiffy

Did you use a hack saw for that or a regular old Kitchen knife? Thanks all, I will get to it when I get back from (another) evacuation Steve

bheinen74
My NAPA kit, which was specific to the number on my carb, came with incorrect needle and seat.......and I had to rig it to work, with a file, and had to smash the sides outward so it would fit more snug. next time, i will only go thru Subaru for the kit. NAPA could not even determine what needle seat i needed when i took my old ones in, definitely not the same as that came in their kit. Got a P/N for that? Frank B
Get some quality carb cleaner, I like Berkible 2+2 gumcutter, and spray everything. Scrub the parts with a rag or soft wire brush. I like to spray some carb cleaner into the cans cap and soak the jets and small parts while cleaning up everything else. Be sure to drive out the roll pin that blocks the idle mixture screw on the front of the carb so you can adjust that after you install it. And replace the fuel filter(s). Good luck

I've tried digging through both the AutoZone site and first subaru but couldn't find anything . https://www.1stsubaruparts.com/partscat.html . Part# Lookup . Search by Factory Part Number . 497001900 (Make: Subaru (duh!)) Also, this is the path to follow in the catalog for a different car: Fuel system - Fuel induction - Carburetor - Overhaul kit - Overhaul kit Steve
