BENGAL
:-\ :-\ Hello suburu people, I have bought myself a nice little 1976 Dl wagon. only problem is that there is an engine knock when warm. I have the heads off and the cyl. linners look great with absolutley NO RIDGE. The repair manual has me pulling the cyl. linners in order to access and remove the wrist pins prior to splitting the engine case. My question is, can I split the case without removing the linners, and reassemble as well?? Also, can anyone tell me where I might find crank and connectiing rod bearings, and head gaskets? I have just about everything else. Thanks in advance BENGAL
zukiru
you have to take the wrist pins out. the pistons only slide out of the head side of the block.
idosubaru
wow an EA63, no joke. have no idea what they even look like. on EA82's and ER27's the fel pro permatorque gasket is preferred over anything else. good quality, used by tons of people here, and don't need to retorque them like the factory service manual needs to. i don't know anything about the EA63 but i'd consider these head gaskets as well for that engine. GeneralDisorder
Subaru engines never have ring ridges. In fact that's largely a problem of the past as the materials used in liners and rings have largely eliminated that problem. But the Subaru boxers have excelent lubrication systems and ring ridges are completely unknown to them. Second - you don't remove the liners. They are cast into the block. You remove plugs on the sides of the block halves to access the wrist pins. The pins come out the side, and then the block halves can be seperated. The EA63 is nearly identical to the later EA71 and the EA81 in basic design. The parts may be difficult to source though and for extra power you might consider swapping to the EA71 as it's a bit more common now. Try rockauto.com for the EA63 parts. If they are availible through sealed-power then they will carry them. GD
moosens
No time right now but the EA63 has removable liners. You know that, the other guys might not. I'll try to help you out later in the weekend. Manuals are a good thing to buy. Cheap too! Remove the liners. Todd has one for sale - 1972-3 which works fine for your 1400 of any year. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=91793

The reassembly proccess makes no sense to me!! The book has me assembling the crank case halves with connecting rods in place, installing the linners with the pistons in them. So, how do I install the wrist pins when I have no access to them? Do I slide the piston far enough down in the bore to access with the linner protruding from the block ect. THANK YOU BENGAL
