Ultimate Subaru Message Board

most important - even if you do need another transmission, a new one is not worth it. subaru transmissions are reliable enough that buying a used low mileage unit is well worth it. and because they are reliable, they are cheap because there's plenty out there for sale that yards can't sell (low demand). (this isn't true of the SVX).

if it's an automatic - there's a chance you only need to replace the rear extension housing (clutches and Duty solenoid C) - which do not require removing the transmission to do.

there's more knowledge and experience on this board about your car than anywhere else in the world. but we can't see it, touch it, drive it, look at it, or smell it. on forums like this more info..specific info..not "i went to town to get groceries"...is a good thing.

how many miles?

what vehicle are we talking about?

manual or automatic would REALLY help.

what exactly happened?

did the AWD ever work?

how did it go out?

any recent work done?

have you checked the axles, drive shaft, FWD fuse (that's an AUTOMATIC only option), and do all your tires match? in other words are all your tires the same brand, size and tread wear/depth?

Wow Crab was right, this is the ultimate subaru site. Ok sorry about leaving out the details. Here we go.

To answer grossgary's questions.

how many miles? Miles= 242xxx

what vehicle are we talking about? 1995 2.2 Impreza LX sedan AWD

manual or automatic would REALLY help. Automatic

what exactly happened? for a couple of weeks when I would put it in reverse I would back for about 20 yds and turn and would hear a *POP sound. I thought it was a cv joint but. just last week I went to accelerate I noticed that my front wheels where spinning out.....first time for that so I took it into the dealer and they said the tranny was done?????

did the AWD ever work? Yes

how did it go out? See above

any recent work done? Had the rear seal put in the tranny about 3 mths ago.

It's not the AWD disable fuse either. They checked that at the dealer.

Yes, I make sure when I put tires on my cars they are all the same, brand ,size, tread.

So, I want to keep the sub for awhile and maybe get an 2.2 outback in addition if there are any left.

hmm this has happened to me...

your output drivershaft on the tail end of the trans sheared off from the clutch plates... now you will need to have the AWD serviced by replacing the outputshaft and while u are in there replace the clutch plates too... My Lego had no AWD when i bought it and when Tom at AllWellDrive.net went to service it, he found out that the hole output shaft was ripped off from the clutch plates... its a common thing when you neglect a torque bind... :burnout:

Ok cool, now who can I find to help me get this replace. The dealer here in Spfd said it would cost around 2400.00???? Is this reasonable? I think they just want replace the whole tranny??

What is neglecting a torque bind? was that the poping sound?

yeah 2400 is a bit too step for the tail end, i would say 1100 to 1500 at the dealer to get that fixed... do a search in here for torque bind, its when your transfer clutches arent working well and you get the shuddering when turning from a stand still... neglecting fixing that can lead to what happened to your car...

At 242,000 miles on the transmission i would replace it with a used one. 200,000 miles is a long stretch for a subaru transmission, and would most likely keep going if you left it be (no broken AWD as stated). At 245,000 its like open heart surgery on a 95 year old.

A much cheaper and wiser option is a good used transmission.

yeah you can get 100,000 miles 4EAT transmissions for a couple hundred with a warranty (i got one for $150 last year, but that's on the cheap side). read my comments already made on replacing the trans and why not to buy used.

$2,400 is waaaay over the top. i've bought a number of legacy's and impreza's (the entire car) for less than that. replacing the rear transfer clutches should only cost $500 tops - someone on here would sell you a rear extension housing with clutches in it for $200 or something (heck i would), and then a couple hundred to install.....BUT.....

exactly like nipper said (good to see you nip!) - replace the trans if you can find a cheap one.

All right thanks for all the help. I guess I'm looking for a good used tranny for a 2.2 AWD automatic. I suspect I should search these forums first eh? I dunno of any place around that would have a used tranny. Which models can I switch it out with?? or will any 2.2 auto tranny awd work?

Oh yea it does shutter under acceleration and then stops after about 30mph. Could that be the tranny also? I also am in need of a steering rack.

Thankyou,thankyou.

I think we need to touble shoot a bit.I dont know alot about 4eat's but we can look at it. If we need to find a trans,we can do that too

you could get a jdm (japan import) .ALOT cheaper$$$$$$$.

You need to locate your transmission I.D. code to insure you get the correct/compatable,replacement.

asking if 4EAT's are compatible is akin to asking if light is a particle or a wave...it's REALLY hard to answer, unless of course the numbers are a perfect match.

4EAT's are a pain the rear to interchange. any EJ 4EAT from 1990 to 1997 will work, it's just a matter of making sure the final drive ratios match his rear diff. but rear diff's are replaceable too, so in essence you can use whatever you want.

i think he needs the 4eat out of a 2.2L legacy, not 2.5L car. the 2.5L engine wasn't available in the us in 95MY. his trans # is TZ102ZAAAA, he can use any 2.2L trans 95 to 98. as long as it has 4 letters on the end, not a 2 and 3 letters, the final drive will match his 4.11 rear diff.

but you can increase the number of possible trans from which to pick, by getting the matching rear diff with it. (this would include ones ending with a 2 and 3 letters) the final drive may be different, but the front and rear diffs will match.

the ones with a 2 and 3 letters have a 1:4.44 final drive ratio. these are in all 2.5L cars 96 - 98 and beyond (?).

Yo 95,

Welcome to the site!!

I'm definately down with helping you out with some wrenching. Me and Mykingcrab are partners in crime when it comes to that type of thing!!

If you do decide to go with that trans that Mykingcrab found then holler at me, I can get 'bout anything shipped to work without a problem! :headbang:

Thanks cocob and kingcrab. I believe john is correct though. My 2.2LX needs a 2.2 trans. I don't want to change rear diff. if I don't have to.

I have the steering rack cleaned and waiting to go in. Once I get a tranny lined out we can set a date to meet and turn some wrench's!

Game on!!

I just got back from Mykingcrab's place out in Seymour, he's working on putting new struts into ROXY and we salvaged a 'new' set of springs off his GL10-T parts wagon in the back yard.

I'm working on cleaning up an EJ22 for in the Brat and I've got a few other Subie related projects kicking around at the moment also.

Definately let me know and we'll get together

All right sounds like a plan. I located a tranny in lebanon for around 450.00. There was a couple of sites that I found one on that was cheaper but I lost the site. Someone listed it here but I failed to remember the site. it wasn't carparts.com it was another one....any help would be great.

Ok, I found this tranny out of a 1996 Legacy wagon 2.2L. Does anyone know if it will work for my 1995 Impreza 2.2L ? I hope it will cuz its close and cheap and fairly low miles?
