Stop Light Is on...

Recommended Posts

The brake fluid reservoir on the master cylinder has a float in it that tells if fluid level is too low. This float tends to stick in a "down" position. Quick fix (assuming level is OK) is to poke at the float with your finger/suitable object to get it unstuck.

Mine is on at least 50% of the time. I have a 1986 GL wagon, 4WD 5-speed, carbureted, non-feedback, non-FI.

All my lights are in top condition, recently tested & inspected. Stop light still comes on, stays on.

It's been coming on for years & years and seems to indicate nothing, other than some funky electrical thing somewhere that is no big deal (other than it's a mystery).

If your lights are in perfect working order I'd just ignore it.

One of the bulb sockets has corrosion on the ground side. Not enough to make the lamp not work, but any imbalance will cause it too light.

The other possibility is that someone wired in a trailer wiring adapter that combines brake and turn lamps, and the box is not functioning properly anymore.

you know there is a trailer light harness in the back trunk area... but it doesnt look to be completely wired ....

If one of the turn signal wires is hooked up to it and the other is not, that will make *stop* lamp light for sure.

A bulb issue should only cause the STOP light to light when you step on the brake (i.e. try to use the bulbs), at which time the imbalance will be sensed. On continuously would indicate the reservoir float circuit, or (not sure if Subarus have them; Datsuns do) the pressure switch on your diagonal braking block shows a problem.
