bratman18
Anyone on here replaced the front windsheild on there car? I have a replacement from the jyard and im debating on putting it in myself. Any thoughts/comments/experience? Done a couple on Loyales. Not that hard just use wire to cut the old one out and thoroughly clean the surface. Go buy some 3M caulk for installing windshields then put a fairly heavy bead down so that there will be no leaks then...with help...lay the new windshield in. Use small pieces if wood or plastic to space up the bottom so that the windshield trim will fit back in after the caulk has set up enough to hold the windshield in place. Hope this helps! I know its different on an EA81 car and might be a little different in a newer car but not sure! Good luck!
bigo1966
sweet thanks, for the tips. The window i have was very new so it has some universal window trim around it. Im going to clean up this universal trim and use it, im pretty sure the trim on my car is unsalvagable. Im hoping it goes pretty smooth, it should... Indrid cold
I did my 88 wagon. Used the glue cartridges you have too heat to 180+ deg..(something like that) assure paint under glass is touched up to prevent rust etc.... and set window in etc... Cost $25. (got glass from j/y) My Hatch, I took it too the local glass dealer... got a hair cut, drank a pop.... drove away.... Cost $220. I will probably let the pro's do it from now on (prying open that can of worms) ..... but it was an interesting experience. Glass dealer would probably do it for reasonable amount if you have window... Edited November 14, 2008 by Indrid cold
GeneralDisorder
Depends on which you are doing. The EA81's are pop-in, while the EA82's are glue-in. Either are pretty easy. I did an EA82 one using the rolled butyl commonly availible at your auto parts house. It's getting the old one out without making a mess, and the prep work that's tricky. If you prep it right and use the butyl stuff properly I can't ever see it leaking again. The stuff is pretty disgustingly sticky. The EA81 pop-in style are easier as there is much less prep work involved. You just cut the old gasket, make sure your surfaces are clean, and pop the new one in using a bit of cord in the groove. mdjdc
I learned all of this from a professional installer and these are his directions. I have replaced several. First, carefully remove the molding from around the windshield. To get the old one out, use 90lb fishing wire. It is more durable than single strand wire like piano wire and acts like a saw cutting the old caulk out. If you can work indoors and get the heat up the window comes out much easier. Once you have the old one out, clean the mating surface well and keep the little rubber blocks at the botto of the frame. Those keep the new windshiel in place while the glue is curing. DO NOT use butyl tape on the windshield, it is for side windows only. It isn't rated for windshields. Get the windshield adhesive in the caulk tubes and you will need two to do a Loyale windshield. Put a bead of adhesive around the frame and press the windshield in place. Some of the adhesive will squeeze out the edges of the windshield and that will hold the molding in place. Press the molding into the groove around the windahield and place some masking tape there to hold it. Keep the windows cracked for 24 hours so that there isn't any internal pressure in the car when closing the doors. The best, is for you to let the car sit for a day and then you will be good to go. If you can't just keep a window cracked so the adhesive has time to cure before being stressed. Duner
Have not done a glue in Soob but on glue in I set windshield in opening and use masking tape to mark the right to left location. Cut tape with utility knife. Tape goes at top center for me. When you do the install you just watch the tape and no wondering if you are centered correctly.
