Gloyale
Just a quick ? Has anyone who's done the SPFI conversion on an ea81 kept there factory power steering pump? Does it bolt up to the EA82 intake? Also curious but less concerned about the AC compressor? (yes my 84 EA81 has AC)
XT6 Magic
The EA81 power steering pump and brackets that mount on the passenger side won't fit with the SPFI installed. The new location of the thermostat and manifold are solidly in the way. I also tried an EA82 style pump and bracket on a core EA81 with SPFI installed and the EA81 crank pulley is wrong and the holes on the EA82 PS bracket are all wrong. I am told the brackets and pulleys for an EA81T might work but I don't have access to them to even see what they look like. It looks like we are going to have to make something. Let me know if you make any progress. -Jeff
Gloyale
Duh, yeah I think I forgot about the thermo housing (but I knew in the back of my mind that I had figured it wouldn't work before) Okay, time for plan B So my idea, is to somehow mount an EJ bracket onto the front of the passenger side head. Then use an EJ pump, with an EA82 pulley mounted to it. ** As a side note, I recently discovered that early Legacy (90,91) EJ22 PS pumps are virtually identical to EA82 pumps. Resevoirs interchange, only difference is the EA82 pump has larger m10 bolt holes (ej uses M8). By simply enlaging the holes in the EJ bracket, you can use an EA82 pump on an EJ. So you see the possibilities are endless. I love the idea of an EA81, with EA82 SPFI and PS pump, mounted via a modified EJ bracket. Now to solve the AC issue:brow:
bratman18
i used factory ps on my ea81 spfi conversion, i had to weld on brackets/modify existing. it stays on the same side and uses a longer belt. I will try to get some pics.
XT6 Magic
Please do send some pictures if you have them. I already have all the passenger side stuff to modify. I'll also look in to the EJ stuff. Thanks Again, -Jeff

But just to let you know...For the rear mount I used the two bolt holes on the back of the motor on that side on the top...then I used the stock bolt holes in the front but I cut the front mount and welded it back together at an angle, so that the pump would line up with the belt path. The resevoir is actually at a little bit of an angle.
Caboobaroo
You can however use an EA81T PS pump bracket and bolt the EA82 pump to it. You can't use the EA82 PS pump bracket since it sticks out further to clear the timing belts which the EA81 doesn't have. Probably the best way to go IMO. I just remembered too that if its not a hydro lifter engine, then there won't be the bosses in the block for it. Hydro lifter engines have them but need to be drilled and tapped. XT6 Magic
I would gladly buy an EA81T PS bracket from somebody if they had one and had time to pull it. Seems like they are impossible to find right now. Right after I build something I'll probably find 4 of them:D Markjw in Yelm WA has the EA81T stuff along with the crank pulley and alternator brackets I need but he doesn't have time to pull them. If anybody lives closer to Mark than I do and wants to make a few bucks by pulling that stuff and sending it to me let me know. Thanks, -Jeff
subiemech85
MarkJw, send me the power steering bracket, the box I sent you should hold it quite nicely otherwise, XT6 Magic send me one of your 4 when you find them
GeneralDisorder
I'll try to get a picture of both brackets (EA81T and EA82) and see what the differences really are dimensionally. I'm reasonably sure that an EA82 version would work with modification. GD
subiemech85
now this is starting to get confusing I want to mount power steering to ea81 engine with ea82 carb and intake in a '87 gl10 that had AC and power steering

The other thing you'll run into if you plan on modifying it is that it might hit the intake since there isn't too much room behind it so keep that in mind. Here's a pic of the EA82 bracket on a hydro EA81
XT6 Magic
So, there are different versions of the EA82 PS bracket too, wonderful:) The version I grabbed and tried was a cast aluminum part that looked different than the one pictured above. Perhaps I should take another look around the yard. My other thought is another small import pump with a remote reservoir. As far as I know it doesn't have to be a Subaru pump as long as the lines can be adapted. Keep the pics coming they do help. subiemech85
seems like a VW setup would fit the description... small, remote res., adaptable lines......
