suberdave Posted November 18, 2008 Share Posted November 18, 2008 RCW 46.37.390 Mufflers required — Smoke and air contaminant standards — Definitions — Penalty, exception. </B>(1) Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway. (2)(a) No motor vehicle first sold and registered as a new motor vehicle on or after January 1, 1971, shall discharge into the atmosphere at elevations of less than three thousand feet any air contaminant for a period of more than ten seconds which is: (i) As dark as or darker than the shade designated as No. 1 on the Ringelmann chart, as published by the United States bureau of mines; or (ii) Of such opacity as to obscure an observer's view to a degree equal to or greater than does smoke described in subsection (a)(i) above. (3) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the engine of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle not equipped as required by this subsection, or which has been amplified as prohibited by this subsection. A court may dismiss an infraction notice for a violation of this subsection if there is reasonable grounds to believe that the vehicle was not operated in violation of this subsection. I also wonder about that...hey, Caboobaroo - a Patroller told you this? The Beast I Drive Posted November 19, 2008 Share Posted November 19, 2008 Dude, Staters make up some great s**t sometimes. I got pulled over IN A DRIVE THROUGH for having a LIFTED SUBARU. He told me it was illegal. I said that was Bulls**t. I took it to court, and proved him wrong. Jerry(bratsrus1) has had similar negative experiences with some real ************************s in the WSP around our area. He said that since it comes out in front of the passenger compartment, it can leak nasty gasses into the compartment and be potentially fatal which would be true. Thus why side pipes and stacks out the bed aren't illegal. That and why would you want to risk your life for something that is "oh so cool"? The Beast I Drive Posted November 19, 2008 Share Posted November 19, 2008 I think it would be fine on a mudd bogger, or a Tuff truck type deal, with the pipes going up higher than the roof of the car, like on those Pull trucks with the boat headers stickin through the hood. thats what we were originally gonna do with the Beast when i got it but i started driving it and decided i didnt want to destroy it like that at a Monster truck rally. I think that i am going to go with my original idea. which is to cut the rest of my roof off six inches behind the front seats, turn the back in to a bed and run my stacks there next to my roll cage. thank you you guys that was what i needed to . Snowman Posted November 20, 2008 Share Posted November 20, 2008 Did I read correctly that you're technically not allowed to have any exhaust that's louder than the factory setup? If so, I think it would be prudent to print copies of that and tape them to all the ricers with super-loud exhausts. Interesting sidenote: The rafting company I work for has mostly 1990s era Bluebird TC2000 busses w/5.9 cummins engines, which were old schoolbusses. They came from the factory, intended for schoolbus use, with the exhaust pipe exiting in front of the axle on the left side (which looked pretty cool). Two years ago, DOT told us that for our use, the exhaust had to exit at the back of the bus to avoid safety issues with gasses coming in through the windows. Apparently it's not okay for tourists to get gassed out, but it is okay for kids (or was up until at least 1998, the year of our newest bus).
