4x4_Welder
Well, I picked up the 89 Turbo Wagon I was looking at, and the damage is a little more extensive than I first thought. It looks like the front universal came apart, the slip yoke is missing, and it bashed the shifter cable pretty badly. The real bad news is that the output housing of the tranny is broken. I'm going to put it up on blocks and pull the crossmember over the next couple days to find out if anything else is broken. While I'm at it, does anybody have a toasted 4EAT that has a good output housing, and a slip yoke to go with it? Or maybe even a good tranny? Check it out, maybe it would be worth it for you
idosubaru
you can replace the rear extension housing without dropping the trans, much less work than the entire deal.
Turbone
So much for the post I had in this thread :-\ I have one also. Let me know if you dont get ahold of Mark.

Gloyale
You can use the tailhousing from any pre-98 4EAT. Just make sure to get the mounts that go with it, the spacing on the bolt holes is different than the original EA82 4EATs
4x4_Welder
Thanks guys- Like I said, I'm going to dig into it over this week, hopefully there isn't any real internal damage. If there is, I'll let you know. Anybody have an approximate weight on these transmissions for shipping costs?

4x4_Welder
As promised, here's pics. First, some really cool redneck jackstands. Free from work, and more stable on dirt: The piece that fell out at me: The hole left in the rear of the tranny: It also broke the mounts:

4x4_Welder
Yup, had to buy groceries, I'll paypal you on Wed or Thurs. That fender has a big dent in it right there too, I might replace it but not too worried. That's about the only body damage on this thing, though. The story I got was that this damage happened on the highway near Boise, and the owner decided it wasn't worth fixing. This car came from WA, I wonder if the former owner is on here? presslab
Looks like a pretty clean break, maybe you can weld it up yourself? A real weld, not J.B. Weld like the pic of Turbone. When changing the extension housing you should check the transfer clutch end play. Subaru sells different thickness thrust bearings for this. My tranny mounts tore the same way. I happened to have some urethane windshield adhesive left over and I glued them back together. It's only been a few months but they are still looking good. 4x4_Welder
I wouldn't trust it- Too porous of a casting, and full of oil from years being behind an EA82. Besides, I hate aluminum welding. The strange part is that it came off clean, no damage to the drum, no slop in any bearings, etc. I have to wonder how much this housing costs from Subaru......... presslab
I've holed the side covers on my dirt bikes and they have been welded no problem, no leaks; it might be worth a shot. You can do it! The newer (I think Legacy '93+) extension housings have a steel sleeve installed where the two "lathe cut rings" ride. You can see the two rings on the transfer clutch assy near the start of the splines. The rings will wear a groove in the aluminum and pressure will leak out making the AWD not as effective. Supposedly the newest rings available at the dealer are also softer.
bheinen74
holy crap . what is happening to make the shaft housing break apart like this?
4x4_Welder
It's assumed to be the failure of the front universal on the driveshaft. At least, mine seems to be this, with no slip yoke and a broken universal. I have a thread going in the parts wanted section, if anybody has this stuff, let me know, and what you want for it. 4x4_Welder
Well, as an update, the thing is almost back together. I keep running into incorrect parts, though. The range of years I was given for compatible parts isn't right or the parts weren't what I was after. I know the new rear housing is newer, and the mounts are different. I was supposed to be able to just use the newer crossmember, but it wasn't lining up with the body bolt holes, so I made a new one. Also, I think the shifter cable is specific to this car. The case itself bolted up, though, and everything seems to be in order there. Oh yeah, this car was from Bellingham, somebody has to have seen this thing around before. Loyale 2.7 Turbo
I know that you are About to Fix that Auto Tranny... but Could I Ask (Just Curious) Why you didn`t Swap there a Manual Tranny instead? ... Don`t you Like Manuals or you needed the Automatic? Kind Regards!
4x4_Welder
I should have gone to a manual, except that just fixing what is there should have been faster and cheaper to fix than going to a manual. I even have a spare 3.9 rear differential I could have put in so it matched a non-turbo transmission. I prefer a manual, any time.
