Mr. Carb
Well I'm a little not so experienced with the newer gen cars. I was able to figure out how to pull apart the ea81's dash and the XT's dash, but on the Outback, I couldn't figure out what is holding the trim cover over the radio on at the bottom. I was able to detach the top half, as I had to replace my instrument cluster lights. Any insight? I appreciate it, thank you!
SubPar
It should just be plastic tabs, at least it is on my Impreza. I took the screws out of the cup holder, removed the cup holder, and then removed the trim piece by gently prying with my fingers.
Mr. Carb
Yeah, the impreza's are way different. Single couple holder on this that folds out of the dash from a thin vertical slit. I unclipped everything but theres still something under the radio on the left side that is holding it in place, right next to the ash tray. This is an 2001 Outback Limited. Forgot to add that in the first post, my bad. -Carl
nipper
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_remove_the_factory_stereo_in_a_2001_Subaru_legacy_L Its a giant puzzle, so just be careful. usually there are sneaky upside down screws at the ashtray. nipper
Mr. Carb
That makes sense, I thought I felt two upside down screws holding the ash tray bracket in. I shall take a look at it this weekend with more, than a standard screw driver.
yohy
A stubby phillips head will do the trick, or an offset style will also work. Kinda have to contort the body to see them (tougher when your overweight).
Mr. Carb
Yup, I can only feel them, the only time I'll see them is after they are removed. It'll be a project for some other time. End of year stuff at work has me way to busy now to spend much time with my home projects.
nickb21
There is a really good "howto" I found a while back, can't seem to find it again though... After some googling this turned up though: http://www.butkus.org/subaru/outback_stereo/outback_stereo.htm I'm sure I have the FSM pages somewhere... PM me if you'd like 'em. (If you ever get around to the project.) Cheers.
