which tire will do me better in snow

Recommended Posts

do you think my Baja Widetrack AT's 205/75/15

or my 175/70/13 Continental now tires, will do better in snow.

last year i drove with the snows. i have a choice this year.

both sets are near new, snows are studless.

All else being equal... whichever is narrower.

But snow tires are also generally made out of a different compound that grips better in cold conditions. The reason so many SUV's slide around and flip over when it snows in Colorado isn't that they are so much worse than my old subaru per se.... but most of them have wide, summer tires, that just get very slippery when it gets cold and icy -- my pickup truck was kind of sketchy in the snow till I put snow tires on it even though it had nice all season tires with kind of agressive tread.

Definitely run the narrower tires. They will dig down and find the traction, and in deep snow you'll be pushing less surface area through the snow which will result in less drag and less of a tendency for the car to be thrown around by the snow. I want to find some of those ice rally tires they run in the WRC that look like freaking donut spares.:burnout:

+1 ^

last winter, I had 205 all season on the Turbo Outback, and I had the 27" SSR swampers on my Red Brat.

the Outback was more fun because I could get it loose real easy, but the Red Brat with teh SSRs, gripped like mad... LSD in the rear of both.....

I think these are what you're looking for:):

(loads very slowly, but worth waiting for)

Sorry, link takes you to the opening page. Follow links to Competition tires, then Rally tires, then S535.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! But what are "Tyres", Ed?

Silverstone is owned by a Malaysian company where they apparently speak "English" as opposed to "American" and they spell funny. I had to find the link that gets back to them and "tyres" is the only way. "Tires" gets you American re-sellers who may or may not have the information you were seeking. Best local, for me, re-seller is Tabor Rally in the Portland area. I bought my S525 mud tires from them; an impressive mud tire if you ask me. Nice to see you posting on the Board again. You were missed.

Boy, I wish you could buy skinny tires still. I remember the 78 series tires, perfect!

My truck came with 78 series tires on 14" rims... I upgraded to 15" rims with 205/75R15's -- which are just a tad smaller diameter than the old 14's were....

Watch the WRC round when they do the Rally of Finland, all the cars have very skinny rubber, cutting through the snow is better than the wide footprint.

rally finland is in august... no snow to be seen.:-\

you're thinking of the sweden or norway. :)

something like this...
