monstaru
ok, so i have taken ea heads off and ej heads off.almost all of them, even some with 200k plus were fairly effortless. i have an ea63 downstairs that i am working on for another board member, and for the ************ing life of me cannot get them off. i have them basically seperated the width of a putty knife all the way around except for an area that is identical on both heads.i realize there are probably sleeves around some of the head bolts, and those are probably the culprit. amazingly i have failed to damage the heads to this point, and obviously would like to keep it that way.any suggestions? cheers, brian

idosubaru
since you can't get either i'm assuming you got all the head bolts out? double check all head and any exterior bolts that may hold it to the block (bracket, intake, etc). if the heads are seized i use a 2x4 or piece of wood and a BFH. start pounding away around the perimeter of the head, working your way around kind of like separating a bellhousing/engine. just keep working around and it'll come off. sometimes on a really stuck one i've needed more than one piece of wood as the end of the first gets mashed and splintered...get another and keep wailing. since it's both sides this probably isn't your problem, but here's how it's gone for me before...even after wailing some wood: Gary: "i know i removed all the freaking head bolts" Back of mind: "check them any way" Gary: "seriously, i've only done this like a hundred times" then i realize i forgot a head bolt. 4x4_Welder
Didn't those engines use a little bolt in the middle under the head? I know all heads at least through EA82 had the bosses cast for this bolt still-

Frank B
Most likely oil crust between the studs and the head, in the holes. Spray a serious amount of wd40, or your favorite penetration oil in them and go have a few more beers. If you can rotate the engine so the head is up, the oil can seep down while you wait. If need be, use a propane torch to lightly heat the aluminum around the steel stud after the oil has soaked. You may get good results with carb cleaner, just don't use the torch ... Tapping with a wood mallet may break it up a bit too.
