StructEngineer
My wife usually drives our 2002 Forester S so I was surprised when we took it on a longer trip that it's only getting 19 MPG on the highway driving 75mph. Is this normal for you guys? I read it should be getting at least 25mpg on the highway. All maintenece is up to snuff including fluids. Runs fine. Only thing I can think of is the O2 sensor. It has 90,000 mi.
98obster
okay, I'll bite. 2 things: the forester is not very aerodynamic (subaru-wize) and the other is 75 mph (at what rpm are you doing 75?). I assume the tire pressure is spot on-cause all sooby owners are ocd about tire pressure (or should be). I bet at 60-65 you would be getting your 25. How are you measuring mileage? StructEngineer
Measuring it by starting with full tank and 0 on the trip meter. Upon next fillup after 220 miles of solid interstate driving I refill up to full with 11.7gal. 220/11.7 = 18.9 miles/gal Yea, tire pressure is good all around on a set of allseasons. Dont want to burn up anything. Also to mention this is driving around the great planes, NOT mountain driving. and I wasn't fighting wind or anything. 98obster
yeah, I just don't trust the notion of how much you put in the tank equating to how much you actually burned-unless you fill up at the same pump etc.. because you are assuming it was full when you started the trip. soobies are alittle strange in the gas tank filling up. since we are bound to see $4 gas again, I recommend a scangauge II for the Fozzie's stocking this Christmas. you can see mileage real time and improve your hypermiling skills. At $1.50/gal where I am-ah, who cares right now. other than that, fluids all around like to be changed once a while-rear diff every couple years or so? cars101 says 27 hwy for Auto, so it may be a combo of measurement discrepancies and driving habits (75mph-really, you expected 27 at 3200 rpm?) howards11
I have a 2000 Forester. My MPG SUCKS. City or highway it plain stinks. I get 17-18 in the city driving. 95% of my driving is city driving. This is with NEW O2 sensors and a new cat. I thought it was my driving. You have to allow about a 10% loss in MPG for the AWD. Plus the Forester is just a box with wheels. I am seriously considering a Ford Escape or Mercury Mariner as my next car. I've about had it with the Forester. The folks here are the BEST but the Subaru.........well..........it takes a lot getting used to. ~Howard
