I never managed to get an EA81 tranny split, but was able to with EA82. I think they EA81s have a big nut at the back of the gearing that I was able to find a socket for it. Does the rear tailhousing unbolt to expose the diff? or is it more of a case of splitting the transmission case and just about doing a rebuild?I'm asking right now because I don't have a subaru right now to look at. GeneralDisorder Posted December 17, 2008 Share Posted December 17, 2008 You have to split the transaxle case - just like all other Subaru transaxles. It is not simple and the 4 speed's require a special socket as mentioned above to remove the extension housing drive gear. I don't reccomend you attempt the job unless you have an FSM and the ability to fab custom tools and equipment as most of the special tools are no longer availible and the procedures for setting the front R&P are obscure and complex besides being difficult without the special tools.
