mikekucharski
Hello all I just finished installing a new clutch and pressure plate on my 2wd 92 loyale. I ran the new clutch up to 25mph prior to finishing front end installation and saw no problems so I moved on and installed every thing else. When I was moving it out of the garage, again no problems until, clunk... the car stops moving. It sounds like the clutch is sliding and the car isnt moving... In addition the noise stops when the pedal is fully depressed. The clutch cable is adjusted properly ( I think- no certain), but i think there is a bigger problem at hand? My thought might be the release bearing, I replaced this with a new one and new clips, however when I installed it is seemed as if the clips were loose, but I proceeded anyways... Finally, I'm hoping someone can tell me what may be wrong, I hope to god that I dont have to take this apart again, it was a nightmare the first time. Thanks for your replies.. baccaruda
first of all, if you DO have to take it apart again, it will go much more smoothly. small consolation... i've done 3 clutch installations, always with new clips, and they've never fit snug. whether the TOB and clips are old or new. i'd suspect your clutch cable first. get a new one from the dealer; it's a little more than napa, but i've had a new napa clutch cable break so i don't choose to recommend their clutch cables. it's common for them to fail near the pedal, which wouldn't affect the adjustment you're inspecting under the hood anyway. you should see if the clutch fork moves when the pedal is used and go from there. the noise you hear could be the clutch pedal itself in the cabin. prattj1
You might try taking the clutch cable back off and try moving the release fork around. The fork may have come off the pivot point, just a guess. GOOD LUCk
mikekucharski
I've already played with the release fork, but im not sure if it is pulling the relase bearing; and disconnected the clutch cable. In addition I think the cable is fine, Ive seen it disengage the clutch. How can I check the cable? Any other sugestions? thanks Mike
mikekucharski
I was talking to one of my friends last night and he is teling me that there is a problem with the release bearing. Can anyone verify this? Once again the problem is that the clutch makes a grinding noise while in gear or in neutral with the pedal released... then the noise stops when the pedal is depressed. In addition the car will not move when in gear, although I havent really experimented with this in fear of tearing up that new clutch disc. Subafreak
If the car will not move when you put it in gear than I would say something is very wrong. You did put it together right, right? Did you check to make sure the splines on the new clutch fit good on the splines on the tranny? I think the 4WDs had a bigger spline. As long as the clutch fork isn't to tight and keeping the clutch from engaging it should still move in gear even if it had a broken clutch cable or bad throwout bearing. MilesFox
is the clutch cable too tight? if its tighte enough, it will engage the clutch fork,
75skunkaroo
my mercury has simular symptoms, pedal in-quiet, pedal out- this hellish wirring/grinding noise. everything is adjusted fine and it has a new throwout bearing but it will still drive(just not in reverse) could be splines or sumpthin inside not meshing right just a guess though -mike
GeneralDisorder
Sorry to say there is no quick answer anyone here can give you - you'll have to tear it apart. Just a hint - pull the engine. It's much easier than pulling the tranny if you don't have a lift. GD
MaroonDuneDoom
before you jump into disassembly again, check to ake sure that the transaxle is in gear. i narrowly escaped another engie pull this way. i installed a newcutch and the damn car wouldn't move. seeing my options i decided to start pulling it again. i got everything pulled on the pass sie then thought of the 4wd. good thing to. damn thing slipped out of 4lo. close call. LUVMYBRAT
Yea I agree with maroondoom. I went through some of the same things your doin, came to find out the 4wd linkage shifted enough to be between 4hi and 4lo, thing sounded lkie the all gears were ground to nothing. Bad thing I did the full engine pull and then caught the problem. I also would check if you do the engine pull to see if splines are same or damaged. but definetly do motor pull and not tranny. Me and my friend had it down to twenty min and it was out (did it 5 times in 13 days!)
subiemech85
second day of diesel power trains 404 I say check the clutch parts, springs, disk, torque dampening springs, alignment, and the obvious
Qman
Which direction did the clutch disc springs face when you put the disc in? Toward motor=bad, away from motor=good. Check the 4WD lever too. Also try to let the clutch out with the E-brake fully applied. This will tell you if the hub is bad or even an axle. If you let the clutch out and it dies not a problem with either but, if you let the clutch out and it doesn't die then get out and see what is turning and what is not. Make sure to have the emergency/parking brake fully applied. A helper wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Skip
All good info but hey guys, Mike says on his first line I just finished installing a new clutch and pressure plate on my 2wd 92 loyale" I hate to say it but my check mark goes beside the wrong clutch disc. Qman's stripped hub spline must be the first thing checked though.
