Radio - no sound and heated seats not working

Recommended Posts

gg,

I just had the same issue on a 99 Forester - and it was the radio.

By that I mean Skip stopped in to help and put a legacy radio that I had in and it worked fine. I believe he even retried the Forester radio.

As the saying goes 'the lights were on but nobody was home'.

Heated seats - on the same car someone had taken the console up and left the seats unplugged. I was really looking for the shifter bulb (that was burnt out) when I discovered the heated seats wer eunplugged.

heated seats in a Brat???

That's a hot one!!!

Gary, the radio in Dave's Forester had only one plug,

some have two.

I have seen other systems where this type radio

was interfaced with a factory subwoofer located under the pass seat.

If the sub is unpowered the radio will not output to any speakers.

As Dave mentioned, you might look under the console to check for disconnected plugs.

Thanks skip and dave,

This does have the surround sound and subwoofer package in it, so i'll check there too. Subwoofer is under the seat you say? I'm an audio goober but I guess that's a big box and should be easily visible?

Guess I'm leaning towards the heated seats and radio issue to be not related. Fuses appeared fine.

Gary, I am not sure where the sub would be in a 2003 Legacy

My 2003 has the McIntosh system which is different.

The sub I was refering to was an earlier Impreza.

BTW

I need to see this Brat with "factory" heated seats.

Weve seen this a few times...prob. unlikely in your case because you have the Sub. package...but weve had more than a handful of these come in and all 4 of the speakers are blown...if its possible and you have a good speaker lying around it might be worth it to just take one of the door panels off and test a single speaker.....a long shot i guess...but it happens...

Now that you mention your's also has

the McIntosh system

Do you also have the antique "Blonde Star" system?

The two are tied together so you can use voice controls

and a hands free phone system.

The On-Star can mute the radio for calls ect.

If it has been removed/disabled it may also disable the speaker output

due to this interface.

The power amp is, as we said, located under the pass seat

and is easy to ID.

Large cooling fins across it's top.

Sorry I do not have the wiring diagram for this radio system.

"oh wow, how would I know if it had/has this system?"

Two ways

1) The presence of a small stub antenna in the roof near the rear.

2) On the center console below the radio ther would be a panel as

shown. The blue button is the On Star button.

probably not this simple, but i bought a 97 outback with no sound... someone had ripped out the whatever from under the passenger seat. i pulled the radio and dis connected the radio harness from the plug going to the missing equipment and plugged it back into the factory speaker wiring harness, works great.

after thought, if they did rip out from under the drivers seat, they may have disconnected the heater connection there.

thanks for all the notes, i'll be getting into this as soon as i get back from the holidays.
