Yo'J
O.K. what "real" work is it going to take to put power steering in with out the whole crossmember from a doner? I am going to drop a ej in my roo from a power everything 2wd 90 leg auto ( I hear my wireing will be fun) but if its going to get re-plumbed to the ej, why dont I start afresh? Isn't it just the box and plumbing, pump and anti rub/vibrational stuff like everywhere else? I don't see what the big deal is, I know a factory can make some nicer looking parts but function and safety seems really doable. Am I missing something? Drilling a hole for grommets and such isn't hard http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/images/smilies/subaruzall.gif, brackets? What? Is the mounting just that bad? I have pics of the boxes but no crossmembers. I have a 82 gl wagon 5spd 2" lift on 14"pugs with toyo a/t at 26.6" and rear coils. soon to be ejed and I hope with power steering, wainscotted rear, fully wooded deck, uncracked front window, fully working drivers window, then, fenders, fresh painy (by me) http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/images/smilies/boozing.gif b r green with rallyx stripes and a light rack with a yellow saftey beacon and floods just lower than my custom wood lumber rack:banana: oh oh oh and working rear window defrost:horse: then winch and off road bumpers. oh god I love this weather! idosubaru
why not swap the needed cross member in from a p/s equipped vehicle? seems like a drop in the bucket compared to a motor swap. maybe someone from here with an EA81 and power steering will let you see their vehicle? there's tons of guys around your area that have them. a quick look might make it simple: "oh, THAT's why i can't do that" "that's not too bad, ive been wanting to buy a torch anyway" "that looks easy"
Yo'J
I haven't been able to find one in the local area and the price of a new rack, manual or power, just pushes me to want to do it right the first time.... and with the noise in the front..... fast. I think I need a new rack,..... soon. Its my dd and I'm planning an ej swap anyway. All the parts are in but this and the snow and cold is the only thing stopping me from pulling this ej22, to get this hulk out of my yard and for the progress I want to make towards this car. If I can push the ball, I'll get the heads done up nice, new seals and belts and a full wireing look-over and a welded set-up on this lift its got almost all new suspention, brakes, rear discs and its all ready to go.....But this. This economy..... I just don't want to buy it twice and I think it might just have to happen that way. I know, I know, (I'm thinking to my self) buy the new manual and replace it till a miracle ea81 fully working power steering rack just happens to show up in front of me. I have to say ...this site has really opened up a new world for me to understand cars and to unleash some creativity on the world. I thank you all. idosubaru
sounds like you have an EJ parts car? will the EJ22 rack not fit in the EA81? it should fit in an EA82 just fine. anyway to make it work in an EA81? maybe swap the EA81 tie rods (inner and outer) onto the EJ22 rack? just thinking out loud. subaru made very few rack changes from the 80's to 2000 even. but i'm not familiar with EA81's at all. swap the entire EJ crossmember, rack and engine? i'm sure that's a no-go? I think the Hydraulic fittings on the EJ rack will be in bad spot for the EA crssmember. But using a EA82 rack shoudl work no problem. Get the lines from the EA82 all the way to the pump. Those lines will hook right into your EJ pump.
Yo'J
Well I think I'm gonna get a fix before a conversion after playing today:) It seems like a part that won't be hard to find and not to expensive Some new ball joints and tierod bushings while its up and allignment when its down. As soon as its snow free I'm under some cars, I'm not jacking in snow to do the crawl, especially just to look.
