bicycle_ben
ok so what do i actually have to do to get the old axle out? you can see the threads on the end of the fresh axle so im guessing there is a nut in there somewhere holding the old one on... i thought i could get to the nut by taking off the stuff you see in the picture but sadly i am mistaken if i pull the brakes off the rotor will the rotor slide off the splines and expose the nut i want ? s'ko
WHAT HE SAID.... (if I remember correctly from the pictures, the axle was already pulled apart at the tranny. With the castle nut removed, you just need some persuasion to get the axle out. I 2X4 w/a hammer works nicely. If you are not planning on using the axle again, just hammer it directly. It's easier to get the axle back in by removing the ball joint.) BW
bicycle_ben
Also are you sure that's the right axle? It looks a little long in the picture. What did it come off of? dang youre good! yeah its not the right one -guess thats what you get when you grab one out of a pile at your friends house i got the old one out now, just had to pound harder on it than i thought i should

bicycle_ben
so i had to tap the old axle out with a hammer - how do you get a new one back in? there really isnt a good way to tap on the back of it unless you take the boot off, pull the CV joint a part and then hit the back of the cup with something ... and does anyone know if an 86 wagon axle will fit an 81? they are not exactly the same but look close enough it might work. The axle will only fit if it's the same body style car...which is EA81. If it has the same front end as your car then it will fit, if it looks like a Loyale then it won't. To get the new axle in make sure you take some sandpaper and take of any corrosion on the end of the axle where it slides through the hub. Then what I do is use a home made slide hammer, But I think if you prep it good enough it will slide in. then once you can get the hub back on you can use the axle nut to tighten it into place. Good luck!

Probably not -- the '86 wagon is the EA82, wherease the '81 is the EA81. The '86 hatch is the EA81... but not the wagon. I think the EA82 is a little longer? Z Yes the axle on an EA82 is longer but he may be referring to the 86 wagon and meaning that it is an EA81 so he needs to clarify the body style
bicycle_ben
the donor car in question is a 5 door wagon style body. im fairly sure i remember seeing EA82 stamped on the engine which means it cant donate an axle to my car ill have to call the U pull in town and see if i can find some other old subies there

Yours is EA81 and it has to come from another EA81. Good luck!!! Think of all the good stuff you're learning!!
