I finished my Twin Stick Mod!

Recommended Posts

I finally finished my twin stick mod. I've been picking away at it for a while now.

I made a new shifter with a piece of 3/8 steel rod. I welded the rod onto a large metal bushing. Then I welded a washer on to the steel rod just above the metal bushing. I used another piece of rod for the linkage. I measured and cut the steel rod and welded bolts onto each end. I used the same rod ends that are on the stock Hi/Lo linkage. I attached it onto the tranny end and then I attached the other end to the washer that I welded onto the new shifter. I then drilled a hole through the passenger side of the transmission tunnel and put a bolt through to hold the new shifter in place. It works great and looks damn close to stock except for the added shifter off to the side!

The last pic shows it in Hi range, the rest show it in Lo range....So what do you think? How does it look?!

Oh yeah and you don't see the spot where I cut the sheet metal on one side....the trim covers it up

Not to bad of a job.. I do reccommend you find a boot for the shifter arm though. You wouldn't believe the amount of road spray that can and will come in thru that hole. BTDT...

Yeah I'm sure. It does help that I don't drive it in the winter. But yes I do agree! And thanks!

for some reason ive always wanted two mice for my computer. not two mice to control one pointer but two different pointers on the screen. now people have asked me why i would ever want this or what it could possibly be good for and they just dont seem to understand. its nice to see that there are other people out there that want more of a good thing!

Looks pretty good, nice and clean with the trim on there, all it needs is that extra hole in the boot for the extra lever

-Bill

Yeah I just cut a slit in the boot so that it could move freely but it would be cool to actually add on to that boot so that the second shifter had it's own boot. But I'm gonna call it good for now.

If you have a sewing machine it wouldnt be too hard to make one ya know... Just pic up some material a your local craft shop and go to town on it

-Bill

That's what I was thinkin'. My sister is pretty good with a sewing machine so maybe I will get her to make it!!

sorry but i dont get it, what does it do?

It makes it so that you can have not only Hi range 2WD but you can also have Lo range 2WD. It works really well when you have big tires and you drive on road a lot. Think about how hard it is to take off on a hill in 2WD. Then think about how bad it feels when you use Lo range 4WD on tar. So the solution is to disconnect the rod that engages Lo range and run a new shifter for Hi/Lo range! And your stock 4WD shifter is only used for 2WD/4WD.

Oh OK :)

When i had my 87 i used to use 4wd low in stop and go traffic all the time (really saved my clucth leg as the car would crawl).

Wish i had thought about the 2wd low then.

Yeah exactly and that's what I've been doing but when you have to turn on a hill or something it really sucks....ya know the whole drive line bind thing. I can think of a couple hills right now that I have to use Lo range on and they involve turning and I can't wait to try this out on those situations!:grin:

The low range is great, and you can do FWD burnouts with 31's

-Bill

Yeah I bet! I'm a little nervous about doing to many burn outs though because of the cheap junk reman axles!!! I would love it if I could get some decent axles. I know MWE is the way to go but money is the problem there!:-\

Psh, I'm doing that kinda stuff with bad axles. Heck I been wheelin' in sand with no CV boots... I am amazed I havent busted an axle yet, the rears are ready to blow and my pass. front is toasted too, but they keep going... Better safe than sorry, but I like to live on the edge

-Bill

If I was still driving an EA82 car then I wouldn't care but I have had cv axle after cv axle blow on my Brat. And not because of the lift...it did the same exact thing when it was stock. These things are really junk and unless you spend money on the MWE axles all you can get is reman junk! They do alright if as long as you aren't turning and getting on it at the same time. I have had many blow up when doing a burnout. Take off from a friends house and as soon as it gets too much traction...BOOM, the inner joint/cup just blows up! So I've learned to just not to burnout!

I was thinking about a twin stick for my wagon... but I can already spin the 29s in high and I'd probably just break something if I had a 2wd lo.

Yeah I can spin my tires in Hi if I need to but it's the fact that it's a lot easier on equipment if I can take off in 2WD Lo. The clutch takes a lot of abuse from big tires even if you drive it right. So I thought this was the way to go!!

That mod sounds great! How long did it take you total? I was thinking of something like that on my old 87 subi. So 4w is separated out of the high/lo. How is shifting in or out of 4wd in high vs lo? Just as normal?

It probably took me a total of 3-4 hours but a lot of that was trial and error and because I wanted it to look like "it was supposed to be there."

Yes when you pull the 4WD lever, all it does is put it in 4WD. The new shifter is for putting it from Hi to Lo. You can shift it into Lo even when you are in 2WD! The 4WD engages the same as it did before, no difference at all. I'm really looking forward to using it on the road!:grin:
