Optimal Exhaust on 1800 motor

My Dad and I had to Change the Entire Exhaust Pipe from the EA82 Wagon long time Ago... Because here in Honduras, Unleaded Gasoline came just untill year 1994... :eek: ...and the EA82 Wagon was Runnin` Here since 1985... So the Cathalytic Converter and other Stuff Got Poisoned with Lead... with all the Related Problems (Like Toxic Gases Making our eyes Red, Overheatin` issues, Slow Revving Engine plus the Weak sensation, etc... ) of a Clogged Exhaust.

 

So we Changed the Entire Pipes from Start to End, with Two inches (2") Pipes, From the Engine to the "Y" which is Open Free, then straight flow to the Muffler, which is Just an Open Box Without Any Restriction. Every Part of the Pipes are Two Inches diameter.

 

in Order to Avoid the "Fart Can" Sound of an Open Box instead of a Muffler, we put Fiberglass in the Box`s inner Walls (The One used to Absorb Noise & Heat in Buildings - industrial Grade) so the Car isn`t Noisy and since Then, no more Toxic Fumes that irritates the Eyes :) nor Slow Revvin` Overheatin` Engine Anymore...

 

I Believe that Open 2" is Very Good to the EA82, it gives the Right Amount of Pressure... The Engine Works too Quiet and no "Pop Pop" noise when you leave the Gas Pedal.

We cant really use a calculator like that cos we have Siamesed ports.

 

Stick with the factory pipes, they cant really be improved without massive time and effort put in to separate the ports. Just make sure the collector flows nicely, and then go 2" after the collector with a hot dog halfway and a sports muffler at the rear. It will flow good and will be pretty quiet

I was told by an old guy at a local exhaust shop and he said you can't make a 1.8 quiet 2" pipe, just too much flow no matter what muffler or something like that.

 

If it's too loud, he's too old.

On topic though, I read somewhere that 2" secondary pipe is optimal for an EA81.

I hope you don't mind me throwing my question into the mix. I am doing a lot of my own custom fab on my EA81 and had the same questions on the exhaust size and length. Some of my questions have already been answered in this thread.

 

The actual port size on the head is 1.75" I have some 1.75" tubing and mandrel bends. Will there be a problem if I have a smooth exit for the exhaust or should I have a step in there?

 

My plan as of now is to build the exhaust with 1.75"tubing from the heads 32" or so into a nice collector into a 2" x 29" glass pack. Then I want to separate into dual exhaust maybe 1.25 or 1.5 inch tubes that will be about 80-90" long.

 

It will run forward then back. This picture was in the mock up stage. It is now being finalized. I am hoping to drive it in a week or so. - THANKS

I've got a stock EA82 y-pipe going into a 2 in pipe to a 2in. muffler on my SPFI'd EA81.....works well....a little loud, but that is the cheap *raptor* muffler.

 

I kinked the exhaust about 2/3rds of the way to the muffler where I made a bend, and I actually think it helped. When I drove it with just the y pipe, it was lacking at low RPMS. After Adding the 2in pipe with the kink....it felt better.

 

And I thought I fu..ed up when I made the bend.
