bugger...lost #1 cylinder=EJ22 time/pic link added

Recommended Posts

just my luck at this time of year....was driving into town yesterday approching the bottom of a fairly steep longish hill...chopped down a cog,put foot down and all of a sudden i'm running on 3 cylinders.

got back home from town and started to investigate...got spark, got fuel (carby'd ej18)....and no compression....thinking that i have taken a chunk off a valve or something similar.

got another motor coming from that local subaru guru's cave...an ej22 for the equivalent of about $430 US dollars:eek:.....so high cos of having to pay someone to work this time of year(would normally be about $300USD).....however motor is being pulled today and i can pick it up tomorrow morning.

lol and i was complaining of being bored a couple of days ago....guess i deserved this then

This time of year? It's summer down there! Let me get some pics of my latest project, shoveling out the snow so I can lay under it on the lava rocks and have the wind blow snow up my rump roast.

:lol:Yeah I know how that is!!!! I have been picking and choosing the days that I can actually work outside on my car. I really wish I had a garage!

i'm getting pics as i go along with my new boxing day sale digicam:lol:...still got to load the software for onto my computer.

the EJ18 that i'm pulling out is a factory carbureted model...the EJ22 will have the dizzy and intake swapped over onto it....i'd like to use the injected manifold but my LPG mixing ring won't fit on the EJ22 throttle body...and i'd need to buy a pod filter an piping to hook it all up

uploading files to photo bucket as i type lol

found out that is the thermo stat doesn't open that the electric fan won't work...and suddenly as your fiddleing under the bonnet with your newly installed running motor the stupid thing starts boiling its head off with no warning...and as you stumble backwards out of the billowing cloud of steam from the overflow you realise that its still running and boiling as well and have to do a runner for the key....

oh yeah...and it doesn't leak anywere near as much water if you hook the heater hoses up BEFORE ya go for a test lap:lol:

i had a bad memory blank....i forgot that you need to fill an EJ thru the top radiator hose:mad:...air locked the waterpump and boiled it:eek:....thought it was the thermostat not opening so drained the coolant and changed the thermostat....still hadn't remembered that it needs to be filled thru the top rad hose...boiled it again and the electric fan didn't start:confused: that got me thinking that the water pump was toast...after it had cooled down, dropped the coolant again and pulled the covers and belts and dropped the pump off...it was a new'ish looking GMB aftermarket pump the same as the one i'd just gone and bought tp replace the 'toasted' one with....got me thinking WTF???

at this stage i was getting a little annoyed

anyway i couldn't understand what was going on so i came on here to see what i could find....found out about the need to fill it thru the top radiator hose...ya can imagine how i felt about that:mad:.

anyway put it all back together with a new timing belt seeing as it was already apart...filled it coolant again THRU THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE lol...a sudden rain storm cought me napping with the bonnet up...and it wouldn't start when i tried it...but this time i was really pissed...thought i had messed up the timming belt change cos it would spit and pop but wouldn't start...found that the plug holes had a fair amount of water down them so blew it out with compressed air...started then but was missing and popping like mad...was also leaking out of the thermosat housing:mad:...drained the coolant again and gave up for the night

this morning i redid the RTV silicon around the T-stat housing filled up coolant (thru top hose lmao) said a prayer to the subaru gods and hit the starter...she turned over about 3 times and lit up into a beautiful smooth idle....if anyone in the us heard a odd noise a few hours ago... it was me yelling with glee.

tooking for a test lap then had a tuning session...timing now set to 12deg btdc....anyone know what the EJ22 is ment to be set to?

loving the extra PAHWAA hahahaha awesome

anyway that ends this epic post of mishaps
