cyberbackpacker
I am in need of some tranny info: Does any 4x4 ea71, ea81, ea82 tranny have a straight cut bevel gear or spiral bevel gear design? Basically do you know of any subie tranny that might be possible to essentially flip the diff to use the 4x4 tranny in a rear mount application? 4x4_Welder
I remember seeing somewhere on here that that isn't possible due to the case design.
The Beast I Drive
Pretty sure it cant be done, if the EA trannies are anything like the EJ trans I tore down today, then no, because the pinion shaft is too close to the outside of the casing. -Bill
cyberbackpacker
That's the rub... I know the EJ tranny's cannot, but I do not have much experience tearing into the older ea trannys and was hoping some of the gurus on here might have some more insight to offer... Phizinza
With case mods and no low range it could most likely be done.
Gloyale
I've heard of a neat possibility for automatics. You can replace the output to pinion shaft gears(which rotate opposite) with a sprocket and chain setup(which rotate toghether). Now this would only change the direction of the front pinion shaft, so something else would have to be done to reverse the rotation of the rear(or front, in a reverse mounting) output. For say, a RWD sandrail, I think a 2wd automatic would be perfect, either 3at or 4EAT. 3at would actually be way easier as it is purely mechanical. cyberbackpacker
Phizinza and gloyale, this is getting more like the type of information I am looking for. Does anyone maybe have pics of these trannies innards (aka with the cases split)?
4x4_Welder
I can get you some pics once I get back under my turbo wagon. The parts should be here on Friday or Monday, so I'll jump under there and get some pics before I put the new rear housing on.
