need some help with my subaru i got a 96 legacy outback that had a 2.5l in it and i took a 2.2 l out of a 98 legacy wagon and put it in the 96 outback now the problem ii am having that it keeps spittting out evap codes at the time of the engine swap i never thought to check for a egr valve on the 98 what is the best way to get this car to stop with the codes .I already have swap out the brain out of the 98 but that brain was spitting out more codes than the 96 my freind saids that the 98 must have more sending sensor than the 96 what can i do to get this motor to work in this car thanks Jack:-\

So, does the '98 motor have an EGR valve on it or not?

You should be able to sort the Evap codes with proper vacuum hose routing. I have a vague memory of connecting the two pipes which go to the charcoal canister on the 2.2 together, and plugging one other vacuum line. I can get you more details if you can't figure it out. The thing is to make the 2.2 motor conform to the vacuum hose diagram sticker under the hood.

just ignore the codes, that's what i do.

if you need them gone, you need to tell us if you have an EGR valve or not. takes about 4 seconds to pop the hood and look. the 98 EJ22 should have an EGR valve actually, rare for that year not to.

woah - you got a 1998 EJ22 without an EGR valve? that's awesome. well, sucks right now for you. those are rare, i have one as well but it's the only one i've ever seen.

there's really no simple solution for you, it's a pain all the way around.

swapping ECU's is probably not going to work, without more tweaking anyway. for instance, it's not as simple as "getting an ECU for a non-EGR vehicle", it's not that easy unfortunately.

i recommend ignoring it.

you could try wiring an EGR valve into the proper pin for the ECU to see it, even if the valve isn't hooked up to anything. just give it what it's looking for so to speak.

if you got an EJ22 manifold with the EGR set up on it, you can tap into the exhaust and create your own plumbing to it, rather than routing it to the head. custom work, but not the end of the world.

and of course you could go the whole bang and swap the drivers side head and intake manifold, that's the only "bolt on" straight forward solution.
