Starter Location

The distance between the starters mount and the bell housing mount is different though, by 6mm (EA82 being the closer one). This is bad up by the flywheel as the starters are interchangeable.

 

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you properly, but if I am the idea then would be to use the same EA version flywheel as the trans came from?

 

I'm making an adapter plate and I need to indicate the locations of the bell-housing bolt pattern, the starter center location and bolt locations, and the input shaft center location. So I don't think that the starter "height" is important just yet, but that will be good info later on.

It's gonna be a fun project. I've got two of them that were dropped in my lap and a buddy knowledgeable in all things bio-diesel and WVO. I am in no way, shape, or form, a believer in bio diesel as a viable alternative for the nation as a whole. But as just a lone shmoe who happens to have the resources to take a whack at it, why not?

 

If it all works out, I'll have a sweet 4x4 wagon that gets 40+ miles to the gallon. Of course with the price of diesel compared to gas I really wouldn't save anything if I ran straight diesel (I would have to do better then 50mpg to equal 30 mpg in gas), I could come out ahead if I can get a stable source of veggie oil.

 

We'll see.

Yeah, this combo may end up being a transmission-eater, I'm still researching that, but some of the VW configurations used with this engine aren't all that far off.

 

I bet as long as you don't horse on it then you'll be fine. I mean they are running stock tranny's with the EJ motors

Because the engine is not a subaru engine you could probably either just make the adapter plate right or you could just space the start motor out until it works once its all bolted up.

I put an EA82 5sp on my EA81 and had to space the starter 4mm out so it would clear once you let go of the key.

I still don't quite get it, you say the starters are interchangeable, do you mean that the bolt pattern is the same, but that the ea81 starter throws the gear out farther? Or is the flywheel on an ea82 closer to the trans in relation to the bell-housing mating surface on the engine backside then an ea81? Or is the seat of the starter on the trans closer to the engine on an ea82 trans? If that's the case, then I need to be sure to use starter from the same ea version as the trans is from correct?

 

I plan on making an adapter that will space the flywheel out the same distance as the adapter spaces the trans away from the motor so from the standpoint of the starter, the flywheel would be in the same location as it was before.

I put an EA82 5 spd d/r in my EA81 and I didn't have to put any spacer?!

itis a Thread about Swap a VW Diesel Engine in a Loyale... Some time ago, a Friend and I got the Idea, but the Lack of enough Money plus other Problems had stopped the Project for a While...

 

I Believe your Updates there Could be So Helpful for Other Members who want to do Something Similar...

You know where the starter bolts to the gearbox? Well that surface to the engine mounting surface is a smaller distance on the EA82 5sp then on the EA81 4sp. The EA82 flywheel's gear sits the exact same distance closer towards the engine. This means EA81 and EA82 starters are interchangeable. But if you use EA81 flywheel on EA82 gearbox you need to space the starter away from the gearbox otherwise there is a chance the starter won't clear once the engine is started and it will whine and eventually the bearings will burn out.

Ahhhhhh, OK, I get what you're saying. Shouldn't be a problem for me since I'll be using an ea82 starter, flywheel, and gearbox. But If I do end up with an ea81 gearbox I'll remember to check that out.

Thanks for the link! I did come across that one and saved it for the good info it had. I was planning on starting a post once I had some more stuff together. Right not I've got the engine (two of them actually) but I need to locate my trans (5spd d/r) then I'll get started on the adapter etc. etc. Keep an eye out on the transplants page!
