Help rpm idle problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 1986 GL-10 Turbo wagon. It has begun to act strange. It starts fine when engine is cold but will not it will not idle down. When the car is turned off and then restarted while engine is still warm. It seems as if it is flooding itself with gas and it is a real job to get it started. Any ideas.

.Your engine has a coolant thermosensor (CTS)

This tells the computer (ECU) how cold/warm the engine is

and the ECU them decides how much fuel needs injected.

The ECU also sets the idle RPM via the Idle Air Control (IAC)

in reference to engine temp.

The CTS is prone to get corroded contacts where it connects

to the car's wiring harness.

Cleaning them sometimes fixes this problem.

Here is a picture of a bare manifold showing it's location

(note the green corrosion on the contacts)

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for the ideas as for more info about my car: It is a 1986 GL-10 turbo 4x4. We actually bought it out of a junk yard for $300. The turbo was bad so we replaced it. The car has been doing real good up to this point. We actually unhooked the auxilliary air sensor ( I think that is what it was called)and it seemed to help at first my ECS light went off and everything did okay. Now the light is back on if the sensor is hooked up or not. We couldn't find another anywhere so we are doing what we have to do. This is the only vehicle we have to go 75 miles round trip to work each day. We watch the guages a lot and sometimes I think they are screwed up. The car does have a Digital dash.
