bratman18
I am pretty sure i have the EA81! I have been thinkin this for a while now and cant remember why tho. lol. The starter is on top.. How can i find out FOR SURE what motor I have? Hmmm, if the starter is on top, I dunno. There should be a stamp on the enigine on the front towards the pass. side. It would either say EA81 or EA71. Check around for that stamp. Pics would be best
mcbrat
sorry I was goofed up there.... there should be an EA81 stamp on top of the block right by the disty. since it's got the top mount starter, the only D/R trans that will fit it is the 1981 GL D/R all others had the side mount starter.... so he would just need to find a bell housing from a later ea81 ... privided of course that it still has the ea81 in it.... kellyray
Alright Gents, I have looked every where for a stamped number. All i can seem to find is a number 3. Are yall sure that it would be on there somewhere? It doesnt help that the motor is covered in oil and dirt so its really hard to see anything. Also what do you thing it would be close to? Whats a disty? Not sure what you mean by that. Im getting 4 tires tomorrow and will probably take my brat around in the country for the first time ive had it. Thanks for all of the help!! Kelly O. The Beast I Drive
Disty is the typical abbreviation for distributor around here, there should be a casting just to the left of the distributor near the front of the engine or near the oil fill tube near the back of the engine. Spray some carb cleaner or degreaser or something to flean off the old oil if you cant see anything. The casting should say EA81 or EA71. If it says EA81 then the motor is an 1800cc. If its EA71 its a 1600cc. -Bill

kellyray
If you only want a small lift, you can clock the torsion bar spline. From memory you get about an inch and a half from each tooth. I ran mine on 3 clicks (4.5") for a while but the torsion bar actually sticks out so far that you are limited to a 26" tire. Some one has told me this before. Has anyone on here heard of doing this???
