hatchsub
spray some wd-40 or PB blaster on the splines to help it slide in. Also make sure there isnt a ton of junk on the splines. Can you get it far enough on to get the nut started on it? pull through that way maybe? Ive never had a problem with my front axles but i only have 2wd so never done rears. monstaru
rear axles do not go through the bearings.they go on splines.like they do on the diff.it sounds like you are doing something wrong.cheers, rbain
The Beast I Drive
Are you trying to put in the stub shaft or the axle itself? Or are you putting in the stub with the axle already pinned on? I didnt have any problem repacing the stub in my Hatch, just hammered it in... -Bill
subaruguru
ok so the rear axle one side conects to the diffthen the other side gose through so you can put the hub onthe smooth part isnt wantign to go through its like it just wedges in there. i dont have it on the diff yet
The Beast I Drive
No, in the rear the axle comes undone from the stub that goes in the wheel hub, are you trying to install just the stub or the whole assembly? How soon does it need to be put together? If it can wait till tommorrow, I would put the stub in the freezer overnight and then before you install it tommorrow heat up the bearings with a blow dryer or heat gun or something. Or just beat it in, use a wood block between the stub and hammer though so you dont mess up the splines the axle slides on to. -Bill
The Beast I Drive
separate the axle itself from the stub that goes into the hub. Will make it a lot easier. -Bill

monstaru
how the hell did the stub come out of the rear assembly anyway? it is a mated unit, has a special mounting all to it's own as far as i understand.i have never had one out because of it.how the hell did that happen?cheers, brian
subaruguru
one axle was already broken and i just slid the stub and all out.
The Beast I Drive
yeah for the rears on the hub end of the axle there is a roll pin that hold the axle onto the splines of the sub, just like on the diff end. Some times its a PITA to get the axle off the stub splines, PB Blaster/ heat are your freind in that case. But that way you can change out rear axles without having to even take off the wheels -Bill
subaruguru
ok so where dose it split at so i know where to hit with the hammer ?
bratman18
Should be able to drive out the pin where the hole is in the pic, then soak it with some PB blaster and then try to work it apart
subaruguru
i understand that part but where dose it split apart like between what spots
bratman18
i understand that part but where dose it split apart like between what spots Between the shiny spot and the rusty spot. I know it doesn't look it but that's where it should come apart. This is the kind of stuff I always have to deal with living up here in the rust belt!:-\ Good luck!
