Couple of question on timing belt

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have a 98 Imp OBS and it's about time for timing belt change. I asked subarugenuineparts.com for a list of things I intent to get and here's the list.

13028aa102 = belt

13033aa042 - tensioner

idlers:

13085aa080

13073aa142

13073aa190

However, when I go to theimportexperts.com they show:

2 - 13073 AA142;

1 - 13069 AA037;

1 - 13085 AA080;

1 - 13028 AA102

Anyone knows where the 13073aa190 comes from?

My 2nd question is that do I need to replace the Sprockets (Left/Right Cam and Crankshaft) at all?

Do they usually fail?

Thank you in advance.

Vincent

you dont have to change anything but the belt....there are tensioners and bearings(idlers) that can wear and its never a bad idea to change...but i wouldnt change any of the sprockets unless a tooth was broken or something...also it isnt a bad idea to change the thermostat (cheap) and maybe the water pump (spendyish) while in there....

I get theimportexperts kits all the time. Then I get the TB locally (Dayco) but the import guys have them at almost the same price.

You may want to have Subaru crank/cam seals around incase you get in there and on eis leaking - or not the brown color..

I assume that's a 2.2 - is so perhaps O rings as well.

I do the waterpump(local autoparts) with a Suby gasket.

If you're planning on keeping the car the labor is basically the same. The parts get expensive but not near what a tow, and fixing/replacing an engine is if one of those relatively cheap idlers or WP fails.

TB is the minimum. If you replace everything I'd say you're good for another 100k.

To grossgary

I have tried searching around the forum and been kept an eye on timing related topic since last week and didn't recall much about the diff. component you are talking about.

To davebugs

Yes it is a 2.2 and the guy I bought from already said there is a small leak from the Pax side seal (if I remember it right.)

FWIW I don't recall the thread GG is referencing. I do recall one about CA emissions versus non CA emissions, the TB differences and supposed cam pulley teeth differences.

I'd get them all to have on hand. Both cam and a crank, and the Oring set.

I'd do them all - or wimp out on the Oring on the pass side rear until it leaks.

Figure how long you think you'd like to keep the car.

How much work the TB job is. It's not really that bad. I generally replace everything. But I'm usually selling the car and don't want to have any problems. It's nice to be able to tell the folks it's all new components and they should be good for 100k.

If a component fails you're talking about a much larger job.

Another question would be if you tear it apart and need parts can you let the car set until the parts arrive or will you have to overpay locally?

advanced search - titles only (DANG THAT SHOULD BE THE DEFAULT!) - search for "timing belt" and it's the 3rd one down:

here it is:

i'm not trying to pull the 'SEARCH!' flame. it's just really helpful to be proficient using that function. it can usually tell you more than the replies you get and it can be much faster.

If it's the first timing belt change, I will check all the idlers out. Spin them and listen for noise. Look for grease leaking. Wiggle the water pump and see if it feels loose. If all looks well just do the belt. For the second belt change, look into changing all the parts mentioned. That's my opinion and what I do for people.

with EJ22's the timing kits are so cheap on ebay that i go ahead and do them on older cars too, like basically anything 10+ years old. granted the sound/spinning should show up any bad bearings.

very few of the 10+ year old cars i do have really tight, well packed bearings. actually i don't know that i've ever felt any that were like new really. new ones are really tight and smooth.

for the 98 obs i just received the kit from Import experts on ebay: TS26172

I also just got the Paraut waterpump from them: PTNM: 131-2102

theimportexperts looks like they are currently out of stock for both on ebay

I'll be doing the 2nd TB change this summer ~150k miles, so just starting to collect parts now.

the only other thing is the TB covers are a B**ch to remove as and I've already bought the driver side inside cover to replace the one I boffed up-I guess you only really need a couple bolts to hold on the covers :-\

looks like sgp.com is quoting you parts:

13085aa080 toothed idler

13073aa142 lower smooth idler

13073aa190 upper smooth idler

and importexperts kits has 2: 13073aa142 (mmm :-\)

however you mention the tensioner part: 13069AA037. I think that is the old tensioner and you need: 13033-AA040
