oldbike49
hey,new to this site but on my second subaru.i have a 95 legacy lsi wagon, auto aprox.180k on car & 70k on new motor.i have been having an issue with the starter, sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt!no clicking ,and all the lights are on.if i give it a tap with something,it usually goes.it was fine up until 3-4 days ago.i replaced the old one wich was doing the same thing only 3 months ago, also put a new battery cable on,cleaned the terminals and connections.battery is maybe 1 yr old,it is whatever the factory specs are.anyone have an idea??i am mechanically inclined, but not too much with the electrical side!hopping it is something simple, starters arent cheap!!also,i was planning on putting a remote start on it,but not sure about it messing with the starter? anyone have any suggestions on witch remote start is the easiest to hook up or should i just scratch the idea???thanks for any info!! Gloyale
I would replace the starter...unless of course your technical savy and can tear it down and rebuild it.... It only takes a screwdriver and a 12mm wrench to remove the plate from the back of the solenoid portion, and pull out the contacts. To the OP: have you tried putting 12V directly to the solenoid? Jumpering it, so to speak? If you do this, and it cranks every time, then you're problem is in the starter circuit. Perhaps the starter relay itself has carbon scoring on it's contacts, and is not able to handle the amp load? If this was an Old Gen I would say the Ig switch itself is going because they had no relay.

monk50
Had 2 '95 subaru's same problem as yours, I think. Starters on this year the copper contacts go bad. EZ to remove the starter and replace. Talk to the sub dealer and get the parts, not very expensive even from the dealer. Monk in NC

The contacts can go bad in any year. I ussualy just clean them up and bend them in towards the plunger a bit. Heavy pieces of copper, no real need to replace.
