Subaru_dude
1993 Impreza 2wd 5spd EJ18. 235,000 miles original engine and transnmission. A few ?'s... I replaced my thermostat O-ring today and applied some sealant to stop a leak that was at the housing (my fault for not doing it right the first time). Pulled it up on some ramps, drained the coolant and replaced the ring, filled it with coolant as much as I could and then started it and let it run at full temp for about 15 minutes or so keeping an eye on the temp gauge. Added coolant, some bubbles came out, added coolant, some bubbles... ya know, the usual cooling system bleeding. Finally it seemingly stopped and I put the cap on and added coolant to the overflow. Now my cooling fans stay on alot more than they used to. They stayed on pretty much all day today despite it being fairly cool. Did I bump something? Could it overheat without showing up on the gauge? I kept an eagle-eye on the temp gauge and it didn't budge, nor has it ever. 2nd Queston: While standing outside of the car I heard a loud, high pitched screeching noise. Seemed to be coming from the bellhousing. I pressed on the clutch pedal and it stopped for a few seconds and then came back again. So I just TOUCHED the pedal and it stopped for a few seconds. Revving the engine also stopped the noise. But at idle when the engine is warm it can be heard from the outside, but not from in the cabin. The throwout bearing only makes noise when the clutch is released, correct? I will be posting this in the WTB section as well as here. Does anybody have a low mileage 2wd 5spd Impreza transmission for sale? The last time I drained the diff grease it looked like somebody threw a confetti party inside my transmission. idosubaru
have you ever done any highway driving with that car? wondering what kind of gas mileage you've gotten with it. make sure the clutch is properly adjusted before assuming it needs the clutch job. might just be a stretched cable or out of adjustment if you're lucky? but it does sound like it needs a clutch job. it's either the throw out bearing or pilot bearing making that noise. either way, needs a clutch job. not sure what you could have hosed, but i don't think there's really anything you could have messed up. sounds like the relay might be stuck or the thermosensor of the fans is hosed?\ you can probably slap a volt meter on the connector and sensor. i have a FWD Legacy trans if you're interested. subiemech85
time for the "Italian Tuneup" take it out and flog it found while googling http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforum/archive/index.php/t-32202.html Is it bad to drive like this real often like everyday, and especially on weekends? I always average about 95 MPH when i drive to bakersfield on the weekends for 2 hrs, when theyre not doing something stupid on the road, like a sign says "expect delays", so everyone slows down and absolutely nothing is going on or "traffic jam" so everyone creates one just to prove the sign right..... Stupid californians!!!! Subaru_dude
During winter when I usually let it warm up a few minutes before I drive, I get right at 30 on straight gas. During the summer I MIGHT hit 36 if I drive it easy. I got 41 in my '89 GL once, it was quite a bit better on gas than the Impreza. This car has definitely seen it's share of high RPM action. It seems to love it. How many miles on that transmission? And is it a straight swap? Have any clue if the gearing is the same as the Imprezas? Someone in NC has one and that's quite a bit closer to me but it really depends on the mileage.
