ron2368
When its cold I can hear it make a scraping sound that goes away once the car is very warm. Definitely the speedometer cable , sound is right behind instrument panel. Is there a way to get some lube into it?
ericem
Just get a new one from the dealer. It's only like $20 and its pretty easy to run, just difficult getting your hand up into the area where the speedocable needs to hook up if you have big hands, going in from the bottom without removing the tach. Comes with the rubber grommet seal, heat shield, etc, fully greased up!
rverdoold
I had the same problem some time a go and last week, easy to regrease the cable which is a lot cheaper and really worth trying. Its the cold that does the trick in making it noisy. Try my work procedure it might help you http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=71564
bheinen74
my 94 does the exact same if its REALLY cold, like 0 or less. does it for about a minute, then its back to normal. sounds really horrid, worse than running fingernails over a chalkboard....... i got used to it, and liv with it. once we get warm temps again, it stays away, and will wait til next winter. Since it can come out like that, then you might as well try that first.
rverdoold
Really don't forget to undo the rubber hose first. I forgot that the last time and had to peel out the clamp from there which is really nasty. I described it in the proper order as far as i can remember, and if you want to oil the paper to add the graphite powder just whipe the engine oil dipstick twice or so. A combo to also check the engine oil multitasking amazing issn't it.
