dave valiant
Any body out there ever swap from P/S to manual steering. I dont have the cash for a new power steering pump and the one that is on the Brat is still working it just sounds like a coffee grinder.Do I need to swap to a manual box or will I be alright just ditching the pump and finding a smaller belt. I figured I would get a little more power and economy with one less accesory and it would be good exercise delivering pizza with armstrong steering. Any help, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. USMB for life
TomRhere
It is not completely nessecary to swap-out the rack unit. I would however, loop the PS lines from the rack to each other. This will keep the fluid from getting all over the engine bay when you crank the steering wheel, and also keep dirt and other nasties from getting into the rack. Just incase you should want to put a new pump on it at a later date.
Russ Hill
Yeah, what Tom said. The cool thing about the P/S racks is that, even with no pump they turn easier than the non-P/s cars. BTW, you could just take the belt off of the pump and run it that way.
mcbrat
yep, the guy who bought Mtn Grizzly had the PS pump freeze up. he cut the belt off, and has been driving it that way ever since....
Meeky Moose
my 85 rx sedan is manual steering.. also an ea82T.. its not hard at all to steer.. now if you were in parking lots for a good 4 hours stright parking in every spot it would get tireing.. but the trip to the store or shopping is not bad.. my wife drives it just fine.. i have an ea82 PS pump sittin here if ya need one... don't know if it'll interchange with the ea81 pumps or not... i had 2 of them sold 1 already.. so i'll give ya the same deal i gave the other board member $25 shipped to your door.. ohh my little ea81 hatch is non PS and it drives like its got PS.. i prefer it over having the PS personally.. dave valiant
This Board rules. Thanks to all once again for helping me.I'm pretty good with a wrench but I have a vacuum between my ears. Saturday I'm gonna disconnect the P/S pump (if it makes it till then) and hopefully pick up a few M.P.G. crossing my fingers. McBrat what are you gonna be asking for the Turbo Brat I've got one but two would be better.
Stupidru
Some Ea82's have the same style pump. Go to advanceauto.com & cross part #'s, then get used pump from junkyard. I only suggest this, cause I hate fighting manual steering.
ShawnW
Ive got a manual rack that was in a Turbo Brat that had been converted to manual steering if you would like it let me know. I can bring it to the midwest meet if you plan on coming. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/usmb/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=10653
