Scored a set of '04 STI springs for the Legacy. There is only one thing that's confusing me. Do I need to get STI front struts and put the Legacy top mounts on them, or use the Legacy struts with STI spring perches(with Legacy top mounts, of course)?

You need the sti rear tophat for sure, it is different, the spring is smaller on the top. The front tophat should be the same.

You can use either 04 sti struts or your legacy struts. 05-up sti struts won't fit.

These springs won't lower the car enough to notice, but the spring rate is higher.

My Legacy is a '90, with the tapered rear springs. I'm not looking to slam the car, just upgrade. I think it does lower about one inch. For the rear I think I'm supposed to use Legacy tophats on STI struts. The STI tophat's bolt spacing is a bit wider than the Legacy.

as the guy that runs sti stuff on most his old crap i have answered most all the questions for myself so i will share.

from what i have found sti springs are shorter then legacy springs, if you wanted that more slammed looked you could put the sti springs on your legacy struts. the spring perches on the sti struts are higher then the legacys so that takes up for the shorter spring.

the best option out there that i like is the 04 full suspension. you can reuse the front sti stop hats and everything, the fronts are a direct bolt on. the rears you need the top hats from a 90-91 legacy AWD. they also had the tapered springs like the stis do. or redrill the top hats of the stis so they will bolt into you stock holes. i have done both.

i shall disband some myths also.

clunking suspension

you will hear about the "clunking" sti suspensions and people think they are garbage. this was due to the struts being inverted and subaru using poor quality grease during assembly, almost this waxy nasty stuff. clunking suspension can generally had for way cheap and can be fixed by simply replacing the nasty grease with some good quality synthetic grease.

only 04s fit

yes and no. yes only the fronts from a 04 will only work but the 04-07 rears will bolt up no problem.

my best answer

i have bought a few sets of clunking 04 full suspension for chump change. people think they are garbage so they are happy to get anything. generally the 04s will have higher miles but the best part about the stis inverted struts is the inserts come out and can be replaced with any 04-07 sti inserts.

i have bought 05-07 low mileage full sets of struts for as low as $100 because people think they are worthless because they only fit 05-07. but with the 04 housings and the newer inserts you can have almost new suspension in your car.

and for the $200-300 i have spent on all my sets you can't beat them for a cheap great upgrade for the older stuff.

good luck

How much difference between the two?
