is this a VLSD chunk?pics added

Recommended Posts

never seen the inside of one of the VLSD's.anyone have pics?

the chunk on the left has all of the characteristics of an LSD.the right is obviously open.these both came

from 4.44 diffs.the open from an outback, and the maybe vlsd from a 2002 forester.what ye say?

well then, someone have a pic of the VLSD chunk?

because i have been into many a diff and the one on the left passes the spin test (both stubs i inserted turned in the same direction)as the one on the right does not.

i have also had my hands on several clutch pack LSD's and know what the characteristics are.that pin through the middle had me fooled as well.but the extra plate matching the ring gear depth on the one on the left is what has me questioning things.it appears that if removed it would take the pressure off of the rest of the ring gear mount...which leads me to believe it is holding something in there, like a viscous unit.

maybe it is aftermarket,it did come from a 2002 forester, and has some recent writing on it that matched some writing on the case.which leads me to believe it had been serviced as of late...

and if you lok at the other pics on photobucket, you can see the difference in spider gears, the open diff spider gears are open at the end of the teeth, the other one has a lip at the end of the teeth with corresponding bevel on the other spider gears.

not saying i know everything for sure,but if it barks like a dog,walks like a dog,and ************s like a dog....its probably a dog.ya know.:lol:cheers, brian

Hey Brian, both those diffs are open, but if the one acts like an LSD, i bet it has one of those Phantom Grip mods done to it, or something is seriously wrong with it. Vlsd units are not good for offroad, they only engage after traction is lost and at higher speeds than crawling. Your best bet is to convert a 3.7 LSD unit to your 4.444 gears.

no, no they aren't both open.

the one on the left has SOME sort of locking mechanism associated with the little extra plate where the ring gear mounts.

you can even see the difference in this photo of the casing.

]IMG_2531.jpg

the difference can be seen here,at the bottom of the casing there is more meat right above that plate.

IMG_2534.jpg

and here, where that plate connects to the outside.......

whatever that plate does or has behind it,locks that sides spider gear, then in turn does not allow the center to rotate therefore locking the other spider gear.it is not open.there is no damage anywhere on it either.

it is not a phantom grip ,as those are big and bulky and go in the center of the diff.and i have an lsd going into this 4.44 case, that is the whole reasoning i opened this up and found what i have found.i am well aware of what characteristics i wish to have for offroad.

cheers, brian

those side pieces look like they could be the sealed viscous units, but they are kinda "small"....

It's not really an extra plate as much as the chunk case itself is two pieces.. looks a LOT like the illustration in Mick's stealth316 link (4th pic up from bottom).

The one on the left is the VLSD. If you were to seperate the 2 halves of the chunk, you would find the *bottom in pic* spider gear actually is actually a friction plate, and the viscous coupler is *underneath it.

VLSD is a form of open diff. It takes alot of *slip* before it really locks. However, in an unloaded test, there is enough stick between the plates that both stubs will turn the same way.

But I can tell you just looking at it that is a VLSD

I don't want ot here people arm chair wheeling the VLSDs

They work damn good for Offroad. Everyone who bashes on them here has never actaully wheeled with one.

Don't talk about ************ you don't know

Yup get a VLSD in the mud and tell me how it works. I Love mine. Awesome for coming out of corners too on the ice track cuz it will lock up on exit instead of entrance. Leaves the car predictable into corners not wondering when the clutch type LSD is going to lock in.

well, the pics posted by Gravityman in this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72899&highlight=open+diff are gone, but it was essentially the same topic.

He actually took out those screw that hold the 2 piecwes toghehter and examined the friction plates. the descrition is still there, but again his photo's are gone.

* note that the picture post by NumbChux in that thread are of a older Clutch type LSD

Left is a VLSD and right is a open , note the large cone washer on the end spider gear and the case thickness difference , this diff is build for smooth operation and low traction , like ice and mud , not all out rock crawling , but any grip is better then transferring power to the wheel that has nun . from what ive seen the older 85_? RX LSD's and 90's-? STI's have the stiffest clutch packs , they cause a lot of under steer !! but great off road !!

I fixed the photo links in this post, but it's only temporary. IF someone want to save them, and rehost, that'd be great.... or I may grab them and add them to the old static USRM and the Forum Based USRM...
