Caramanos2000
My EA-82 wagon has a new master cyl., resealed calipers and lifetime warranty pads. Would it be worth it to pick up some fleebay drilled or vented rotors to improve my braking or better off doing a rear disc swap? How much would it cost to get all the needed parts for this shipped to me?
idosubaru
i don't know much about performance braking. but in trying to find better braking on my vehicles the consensus seems to be that drilled/slotted are not necessary nor would they help average driving. best for racing or high performance/high heat applications. the rear disc swap folks seem to love the improvement from that swap (this includes EA and EJ folks). i think i'd entertain that. upgrade to 5 lug and snag some EJ stuff. our impreza brakes really nice with WRX dual piston calipers up front. and that's still with rear drums?!:-\
Caramanos2000
Well then how hard/expensive would a 5 lug switch be?
idosubaru
oh man, what a question. there's tons of 5 lug swap threads on here. there's too many different ways and options to recount it every time. read, study and make a list before asking any questions, there's too many possibilities. the parts are hard to find here in the US because there are XT6 only parts required to do it cheap and easy. i could send you the XT6 stuff necessary for this for a few hundred dollars. EJ stuff has rear ebrake so you'll have to also research the nissan rear caliper swap if you want to upgrade to bigger calipers - nissans have a set of rear calipers with ebrake that easily swap. search for that info as well. good luck. carfreak85
It is the opinion of several industry leading specialists that with modern brake pad composition, drilled/slotted rotors are not necessacry for out-gassing, a byproduct of pad construction in the past. The loss of mass hurts the rotor's ability to act as a heat sink. But, Porsche and other manufacturers have slotted and/or drilled rotors, you may think. Pure fashion. They would be better off with sold rotors too, but people like the look. Find yourself some Hawk performance pads for the front, rear disc conversion for the rear, some high quality rotors, good brake fluid and call it good. GeneralDisorder
What he said ^ I'll also add that EA82's aren't Porsche's.... and never will be. It's a 90 HP economy car. Treat it as such and you'll be much better off (so will your wallet). GD
The Dude Abides
I understand what you want to do. If its what i think you waht. You want some cool looking rotors to show off to your friends, or something cool to brag about your car. I promise you you dont need it. Drilled rotors crack and slotted are unnecessary because you cant possibly build up that much heat. Make sure your calipers are taken care of and mastercylinder is top ed off. Keep your system blead and good on pressure, and swap to rear discs. Those things alone will help your car stop faster. Again im not makeing fun of you but trust me your going to impress them with your 4wd ability then anything else.
Caramanos2000
Actually with steelies even if I had drilled rotors no one could see em Point taken though
presslab
I've always been a little skeptical of lifetime warranty pads... I'm sure they design them with not wearing out as a primary goal, things like fade resistance and stopping power are probably not at the top of the list. So by better braking do you want more stopping power, more fade resistance, better pedal feel, or ?
torxxx
rear disc conversion and the mid grade pads should work just fine. I wouldnt spend any more money on "upgrading" the EA82 brakes unless you are going to put 5 lug setup on them. Cross drilled and all that, I wouldnt waste your money on it. If you are that into upgrades, go 5 lug I went with the rear discs on 26 inch rubber on 14 inch pugs and my car stops just fine. (lifted 4 inch front 5 rear, 200 lb speaker box, 3 toolboxes car weighs in at 3900 lbs) I kept the drum proportioning valve on it for ice racing because it helps the rear lock up slightly before the front. On dry pavement its VERY hard to lock up the brakes
