Subi81
So my dad was drinving my 81 wagon (4wd d/r manual) and came home said it wouldn't go into 3rd gear. Checked the Dipstick, no oil just smoke film. Drained less than a qt out of it. Found 4 or so teeth from I think 3rd gear in the bottom of the trans, with my finger. I am thinking junk yard trans, or rebuild. Let me know if anyone has experiance with rebuilding a subi trans. The crazy mechanic inside of me says go for it. But I am curious on expence To see the photos follow the link then click on "My Photos" http://photos.yahoo.com/subi81@sbcglobal.net Thanks a bunch! NV Zeno
Oh, man...you just missed half price weekend at Pick-N-Pull. I believe trannys were something like $65~75, maybe less. If I remember correctly, 3rd gear problems are considered common in the EA81's. Probably still a bargain to get a used one, anything's better than what you have now. If you go that route, I believe PnP charges a core for the unit. Just so you're prepared.
Subi81
Damn missed it! As soon as I saw the Metal chunks I was thinking PnP. Ya I have a $75 dollar 5 spd d/r in my 86 turbo wagon. Works like a Million bucks HA HA PnP! Thanks for the Reply
Karl
you don't want to rebuild it yourself, it's a nighmare, did it once with a VW, something I never want to do again. You'd need special tools, help (at least one other set of hands) and a BIG press or vice... my zwei pfennig, -Dok

GeneralDisorder
Typical gear teeth - that one's toast. Rebuilding the 4 speed is about the worst possible request a Subaru mechanic could get as far as tranny work goes. The innards of it are a real nightmare. Special tools are required just to dissasemble it, and the amount of things that can go wrong durring inspection / repair / assembly are just mind boggling. I have a rebuild manual sitting here, and have been looking into this possibility myself - but I'm crazy. If you value your sanity, get one from the JY, and be done with it. Better yet - put in a 5 speed 4WD from an EA82 car and call it good. I'm a pretty darn good mechanic, and I wouldn'y put my chances of rebuilding one of these at more than say 20%. By the manual, and the research I've done I would have to say it might be the most challenging thing I will have yet attempted..... GD

baccaruda
heh. i've also pulled parts off of a car i once owned at the yard. i usually strip them down pretty well first but sometimes ya gotta go back i say swap in a 5 speed d/r as well. i don't know if you'd need the rear differential to match.. if your car already has a 3.9 ratio rear differential you'll be ok there.
