ea81 camshaft removal

Recommended Posts

right, well i have tralled the threads od USMB, and i cant seem to find anywhere about removing a EA81 cam, i swear i have seen it somewhere!

can anyone direct me to the thread

if not, what is there that needs to be done, and anything i should watch out for, and how do i retime the cam, i have a performance upgrade SUB4 cam to go in

do i need to remove the heads for this?

You would have to remove the valve covers to remove the pushrods, and the lifter, or what ever rides the cam on the ea81, would need to be replaced with the cam. They wear together.

Did you get stronger valve springs with the cam?

I hope youre not afraid to get really oily and dirty.

Pull your engine, and strip it.

To get at the cam, you have to split the case. I recommend the HTKYSA manual for a good reference.

In short, you are looking at the following.

-Remove valve covers

-Remove intake manifold

-Remove heads

-Remove oil pump, water pump, disty

-Remove pistons

-Remove back cover and oil pan

-Split the case

Youre essentially tearing the motor down as far as it can go.

You will want to put a micrometer on all your bearings, etc ... and replace as necessary.

Also would be a good time to deglaze your cylinders and do new piston rings.

ah, bollocks to that then, i was gonna knock it out in a day, cba with oil pump and heads, ive only just put my new heads on it

cam is matched for heads and carbs apprantly, some of you know my SUB4 setup, tis a bit different :P

oh, yeah did forget bout the equal wear, but ive got it lying around and was just gonna whack it in, think its best wait for the forged internals rebuild to put that in, might just regrind it again and max it out
