Bubs360
Hey, I'm sorry about asking so many general questions about different Subaru models. You guys are giving me a lot of help in finding a good Subaru to purchase. One Subaru I've been avoiding is the second generation Legacy. I don't know what it is about them, but it seems like people don't like them. I've got an opportunity to buy a '95 Subaru Legacy 2.2 with 165,000 miles. Apparently has no issues, five speed manual. I'm waiting to get more information on the car. But, what is with the general consensus that the '95+ Legacies are bad cars? I haven't seen it much here but a few other forums I'm on seem to dislike them. What's with the hate?
Psyko
I don't understand what people don't like about them. They're a better looking body and [some] still came with the legendary EJ22. I had a '95 auto wagon with the EJ22 and loved it. Even with 238k on the original engine and tranny I was confident enough to let my sister drive it from Washington State to Texas, where I knew she wouldn't have a free mechanic to trouble shoot and fix big problems. It's still going strong 6 months later. If you like the '95 you're looking at, then I can't think of why you shouldn't get it. Just keep them maintained. Bubs360
Hey, Perhaps the biggest thing I remember people saying now was about the 2.5 head gasket problems. This one has the EJ22 so no problems with that. Well, if I get the information I need about the car, chances are I'll buy it.
Suzam
Just make sure that it's AWD. 1995 was the last year of the Subaru's to offer FWD and AWD in the Legacy. You could end up not getting AWD if you're not careful.
Bubs360
I did a VIN check and it comes up in the database as AWD, so it should be. For some reason the thought of me buying a FWD Subaru turns my stomach. Not sure why it bugs me so much, but it feels like an abomination for a '90 or newer Subaru to be FWD. subyfreak
Lots of reasons to like that 95. Most of all is the ej22 engine in it. One of the best engines made by Subaru. If I remember correctly the 95 2.2 was still a non-interference engine also. Finding one with a 5sp is also a bonus. If the body is not rotten and the price is right you can not go wrong. Yeah, you're right there. Non-interference is a huge plus for me. I can't seem to track down exactly why people dislike the car, I think it may have been on a more high-performance oriented forum where they disliked the newer, heavier design. Doesn't matter much to me, although I will be participating in a rallysprint event if I get a car before March 15th. Just like autocross but on dirt, no jumps or anything that can damage the car. EVOthis
Just from my experience i have a 96 Legacy with almost 199,000 miles and my car has not had an easy life with some really abusive previous owners...however once i bought the car the only two real half not even major problem i had was the cam seals leaking like a civ...and some torque bind out of the 5 speed...than again what do you expect from a mistreated car with 173,000 miles....but anyways i would definately recommend a 95 Legacy as said with the non-interference EJ22...best engine built by subaru in my opinion...plus there cake to work on should anything go wrong....
