Clutch question, 00 legacy outback

Hi folks,

Been reading on this Forum for a few months, lots of great info and knowledge. Here is my Subaru history, both kids drive 95 Legacys, Wife drives an 05 Outback. Living in Vermont I like them driving AWD.

I do all of the routine maintainance and repairs, but my wrenching is enjoyed more when it is on my 57 Dodge Power Wagon!

Just before Christmas, my Brother in law discovered he had a blown head gasket on his 00 Legacy Outback with 165,000 miles. Rather than get it fixed, he bought a brand new one and gave his old car to my Daughter to replace her aging 95 Legacy. Great deal for her, but I get to fix it!

I fiigure to replace the timing belt, all of the idlers and tensioner, all seals, gaskets, hoses, water pump, etc. etc.

I have pulled the engine and done the disassembly, started stockpiling the parts. I got a bunch of stuff from 1stsubaruparts.com. Somewhere on this Forum I read that it is best to stay with an OEM clutch. 1stsubaru listed all of the components except the pressure plate. I thought that a bit odd. So, my local dealer has it, for $185. I looked around the net and found a company who listed an aftermarket clutch and the different applications. The Legacy clutch 90 - 05, Imprezza 98 -07,

Outback 00 - 04 and Forrester 98 -02, ALL had the same SKU number. 1stsubaruparts.com does list pressure plates for 99 - 02 Forrester and 00 - 02 Imprezza. Both are the same price of $86.36. Based on that info, would it be safe to order the Imprezza or Forrester pressure plate from 1stsubaru?

Sorry if this has gotten a bit long winded. I appreciate any feedback.

An aftermarket clutch kit will work just fine. I have actually never used an OEM one, not because I have anything against them, but just because you can get good ones for less money and they will last just as long as OEM, as long as they are driven correctly. Good luck!

+1^... aftermarket clutches are just fine...actually the ones Subaru dealers (at least my dealer) use are exedy clutch kits...they can be found for much cheaper than the dealer...also i dont know about your dealer but down where i work according to the parts dept. you cant just order a "clutch kit" you have to order everything seperate...clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing etc...i think its ridiculous....

Welcome fellow Vermonter, I worked at Kinney Subaru in Rutland for years. Now living in Nevada. I have found that the aftermarket clutch kits work fine. Just avoid the really cheap ones, they have to cut corners somewhere. I just installed one from Kragens in a 97 OBW, cost 187.00. When comparing the original parts, they were identical. Clutch works great, just like butter.

yes the 02 Forester clutch will be the same as your 2000 OBW. same EJ25 engine and same transmission case/design, essentially the same trans really.

 

you should be able to order a clutch kit from Subaru.

 

be sure to replace the pilot bearing, throw out bearing and two clutch clips while yo'ure in there, assuming this is a cable clutch - in 2000 some had cable, some had hydraulic.

 

+1 aftermarket clutch kits are fine.

 

if you haven't gotten the timing pulleys yet, ebay has aftermarket kits for around $200 i think for all the pulleys and tensioner. get the kits for the pulleys/tensioner and use a Subaru belt.

 

some friends of mine in MD have a power wagon - owned since new even. i forget the year, but the thing is a beast of a machine.
